POSITION SUMMARYUnder the supervision of the Director of the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD), the coordinator is primarily responsible for determining and facilitating the implementation of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities and handling the day-to-day operations of SSD. SSD is responsible for providing equal access and reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities while attending Columbia and as required by law. The coordinator determines and arranges classroom, testing, and other accommodations for students with disabilities and resolves problems and conflicts related to accommodations and services. Work involves considerable diplomacy and mediation, as well as awareness of the need to strike a balance between students’ rights and the responsibilities that accompany those rights. Errors may result in continuing conflict, ill will or lawsuits. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities based on documentation, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and the Fair Housing Act, student input, and the College’s requirements. Review medical, psychological, neurological, and educational documentation to determine eligibility of students for SSD services pursuant to applicable laws. Work with students individually and in small groups to help them develop learning strategies appropriate to their learning strengths and challenges. Meet with and provide accommodation letters, support, coaching, and advocacy for students with disabilities. Manage and update the accommodation process workflow and other features of the MySSD software program Determine and coordinate delivery of academic accommodations, including testing, note takers, audiobooks, and other assistive technology accommodations. Educate and inform students and parents regarding the accommodation process and support services for students with disabilities. Collaborate with faculty and other campus resources to implement support strategies for students Develop workshops to address student needs upon request by the Director. Represent the department and conduct presentations to educate the College community regarding SSD during various College events (, admissions, orientation, faculty, and staff training opportunities) and facilitate educational and sensitivity training programs for the College community. Develop working relationships with campus partners and external agencies for the enhancement of services provided by SSD. Review and analyze SSD processes, technology, and equipment needs and make recommendations for updates and enhancements. Serve on Student Affairs committees as needed. Supervise, recruit, train, evaluate, and approve time for the SSD administrative support staff and student workers. Perform other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned or required. Qualifications Master’s degree in a disability, education, or psychology-related field. Strong working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and the Fair Housing Act required. Ability to read and interpret medical and psychoeducational documentation related to accommodations; prior experience reviewing, evaluating, and determining academic accommodations for college students with disabilities strongly preferred. Computer proficiency in MS Office Demonstrated knowledge assistive technology and AIM database management system preferred. Ability to work with diverse populations. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to develop and organize student support groups and informational sessions and workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Flexibility to attend programs and events, as needed.
