Position Summary: This is professional, staff public relations, work publicizing and promoting the Allegheny County Health Department. An employee in this class creates communication materials for dissemination through live presentations, print, broadcast, social media and the County website. The employee works under the supervision of the Public Health Information Officer, who reviews and approves all materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency and adherence to agency policy. Duties: Researches and writes communications material such as news releases, fact sheets, talking points, proclamations, public service announcements, advertising copy and web site content. Assists in developing ideas and campaigns to publicize and promote the Health Department. Assists in maintaining relationships with other Health Department staff, news media and community organizations. Assists in the preparation of Health Department publications. Assists in updating content for the Health Department web site. Assists in responding to emails received via the Health Department web site. Assists in responding to referrals received from the County Information Center. Assists in overseeing operation of the Health Department’s Telephone Service Center. Incorporating ethical standards of practice into all interactions with individuals, organizations, and communities through all-hazards planning. Responds to Public Health emergencies as assigned by the Health Department. Creates content and serve as co-writer/editor for department messaging. Assists programs in preparation for Board of Health meetings. Assist with crisis communications planning and execution. Consults with programs to identify communications and advertising needs. Generates social media content. Performs other duties as required or requested. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Public relations principles and techniques, including modern media communication practices. Methods and techniques of disseminating information including the use of print, broadcast, web, and social media. Methods and techniques used in creating and maintaining a website. Methods and techniques used in performing research. English usage, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. Basic principles of computer use, internet searches, email use Microsoft Office programs including Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and other database programs. Skill in: Graphic Design Canva Adobe Suite Communications Marketing Publishing Editing Press Releases Marketing Plans Public Health Microsoft Office Ability to: Gather information and write communications materials such as news releases, fact sheets, talking points, proclamations, public service announcements advertising copy and web site content. Evaluate concepts and materials from the standpoint of audience interest, relevance, and understanding; content; style; and organization of information. Maintain relationships with other Health Department staff, news media, community organizations and the general public. Operate a computer and learn new software programs. Organized and detailed oriented. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing with all levels of employees and the general public. Work independently and in a team environment. Respond to Public Health Emergencies. Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year. Veterans' Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
