Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Performs varied and complex duties involving exam preparation, performance of radiological exams, and general supportive duties within the Women’s Health Resource Organization. Processes forms, paperwork and other material related to all examinations. Prepares and positions patients, providing reassurances, as required. Maintains records of all examinations and procedures. Complies with radiation and other safety-related rules and regulations.

Performs Mammography procedures.

  • Inputs all data with I.D. control.
  • Performs standard CCs and MLOs for screening procedures.
  • Performs a variety of advanced positioning images for diagnostic evaluation.
  • Assists Radiologist during needle localization and stereotactic procedures.
  • Has a good working knowledge of processing.
  • Critiques images and all mandatory marking systems. Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as familiarity with a variety of pathological conditions. Exercises judgment to extend or discontinue the exam.
  • Reviews daily schedule for changes.
  • Reviews/prepares all required forms.
  • Review/obtains previous films.
  • Reviews needle localization/stereotactic exams with a radiologist on a day prior to the exam.
  • Evaluates information provided by referring physicians, patients, and previous reports and determines an appropriate screening or diagnostic exam.
  • Instructs/reviews breast self-exam techniques.
  • Instructs/reviews ACS guidelines for breast health, screening verses diagnostic. Has a good understanding of related diagnostic tools, i.e. ultrasound, needle localizations, stereotactic, MRI, needle aspirations, etc.
  • Reviews discharge instructions and follow up policies.
  • Evaluates call backs and assigns the appropriate time frame.

Maintains communication.

  • Explains procedures to each patient. Provides reassurance, answers questions, eliminates concerns with a professional, caring attitude. Becomes a patient advocate during invasive procedures.
  • Reads reports to authorized staff over phones. Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Radiology, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services.
  • Maintains communication with radiology to ensure proper protocol on each patient.
  • Initiates applicable “incident reports” and reports incomplete and incorrect examinations to ensure proper patient charge and continuity of patient care.
  • Provides a high level of customer service.

Exercises charged responsibility as required.

  • Assumes charge responsibility for the section as required. Provides direction and assistance to technologists and support staff. Distributes work assignments.
  • Reviews film for quality and readability and takes steps to ensure that quality control standards are met.

Ensures a high level of quality control.

  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly quality control tests on equipment.
  • Shares concerns, complaints, all feedback to the lead technologist to ensure appropriate quality improvement plan is developed in all areas.
  • Meets requirements to maintain a repeat rate below 5%.
  • Follows policies and procedures.
  • Assists nuclear physicist with test for equipment efficiency and safety. Works with manufacturer to arrange monthly preventative maintenance and/or emergency repairs.
  • Participates in preparing reports required by various federal and state agencies.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly conditions.
  • When using portable equipment in Operating Room during surgical procedures, follows all regulations dealing with sterile techniques and related matters.

Performs related duties.

  • Maintains responsibility for daily laundry and room supplies.
  • Maintains general cleanliness of the department, i.e., waiting area, break room, exam rooms, etc.
  • Completes all required forms, records and reports concerning number and types of procedures performed.
  • Performs general radiology as needed. May be assigned in the Radiology section as Radiology Technologist as part of regular work assignment.
  • Assists clerical support staff with patient scheduling, recording, keeping and related tasks.
  • Assists in assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand, when needed.
  • Assists with training and orientation of new employees.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
  • As required, transports patients on stretchers or wheelchairs to and from examining room and other areas.
  • Protects visitor and general public from unnecessary radiation exposure.
  • Completes STAT reports and delivers to proper person.
  • Remains available for emergency on-call as needed.
  • Attends 66% of staff meetings.
  • Attends monthly inservices.
  • Acknowledges all tests to generate patient charges on a daily basis.

Educational / Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma and two-year accredited program in Radiologic Technology

State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:

Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with Certification in Mammography (M) and licensed in the State of Connecticut.

Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:

General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital. Radiation Safety annually; all other mandated programs as they occur.

Special Requirements:

Registered with one year experience as a Radiologic Technologist I and experience in Mammography.

Physical Requirements:

On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 35 lbs. routinely. Physical agility including but not limited to bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, pulling, pushing and twisting. Manipulate radiology, special equipment and data input. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Assesses patient's response to medication and procedure.

Work Environment:

Worker must adjust to performing routine and repetitive tasks. Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body tissues or fluids; hazardous waste materials; bodily injuries and unpleasant noises. Radiation exposure; chemical fume exposure; frequent changes in lighting levels. Various room temperatures. Regular exposure to patient elements, stress, rapid pace with multi-tasking skills.

Cognitive Requirements:

Individual must be able to see objects closely and far away and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given over long periods of time. Worker must be able to adjust routine to accommodate patient or department without affecting departmental flow. Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English, excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend and execute complicated and detailed written and oral instructions. Good organizational skills, excellent decision making skills and writing skills.
