POSITION TITLE: Occupational Therapist

JOB SUMMARY

The Occupational Therapist provides services for the purpose of promoting health and wellness and to those who have or are at risk for developing an illness, injury, disease, disorder, condition, impairment, disability, activity limitation, or participation restriction. The Occupational Therapist will select methods or strategies to direct the process of interventions, evaluate factors affecting activities of daily living and implements interventions and procedures to promote or enhance safety and performance in activities of daily living. The Occupational Therapist performs in a manner consistent with Marshfield Clinic Health Systems’ mission, policies and initiatives while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1.     Utilizes specialized skills in the assessment and treatment to promote the goals of preventing dysfunction, restoration of function and/or reversal of the progression of pathology in order to enhance participation in life.   

2.     Evaluates patients’ treatment program in collaboration with the medical staff to provide recommended strategies and/or interventions to enable or enhance performance in everyday life activities.  

3.     Assesses physical injury or illness, functional deficits or the aging process to determine treatment options.

4.     Administers treatment programs per physician instructions and patient evaluation.

5.     Collaborates with physicians and medical staff on patient care issues to ensure patient needs are met.  

6.     Evaluates charts and reports on patient’s progress to provide accurate documentation of treatment.  

7.     Completes billing and documentation according to department policy to meet the needs of the patients, the payers and facility. Strong typing skills are needed to help prepare documentation and capture information at the point of service. 

8.     Maintains quality assurance program, patient safety, environmental awareness and infection control to ensure safety of patients and staff.  

9.     Maintains patients’ records, charts, and discharge summaries in a timely manner to ensure up to date accurate information.  

10. Educates patients and family in appropriate care and equipment needs while establishing exercise programs specific to the patient’s condition to assist in healing and function. 

11. Conducts and participates in clinical educational programs to provide ongoing support to colleagues, student mentors and interns.  

12. Assists with data collection, prepares reports, and maintains patients’ statistics to help evaluate outcome measures.  

13. Evaluate for equipment needs, inspects equipment to ensure equipment is in good/safe working condition and modify to best fit patient needs. 

14. Maintains work space in a clean and orderly manner to help assist with efficient work practices.

15. Assess’, fits, fabricates, dispenses and bills for custom and pre-fabricated DME items.

16. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.

17. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy.

 

Preferred/Optional: Master’s or Doctorate degree in occupational therapy.

 

EXPERIENCE  

Minimum Required: Supervised clinical internship(s) working with adult and/or pediatric populations to prepare for professional registration

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES  

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required:  

•     Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

•     Occupational Therapist license awarded by the State of Wisconsin.

 

Preferred/Optional: 

•     Current certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.

•     Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

 

PATIENT POPULATIONS SERVED

Individuals hired are expected to serve patients of different ages, backgrounds, etc. When performing the essential functions of the role, the individual must identify the patient age group to be served and apply the appropriate care based on the patient’s age and background. The hiring manager is responsible for communicating the patient population generally encountered in the role and is responsible for ensuring the appropriate cultural, age and related training needed to serve the patient populations.
