POSITION SUMMARY

The Controls Engineer plans, designs, and implements complex instrumentation and control systems, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, communication networks and advanced computer applications. The Controls Engineer also provides electrical, instrumentational, and industrial controls engineering support for the machines including PLC controls, hydraulic circuits, electronic circuits and troubleshooting of all breakdown maintenance items up to and including all phases of engineering, construction, maintenance and documentation of machinery, controls and utility equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work on capital projects including the review of electrical, industrial controls, and network drawings, programming, and commissioning of the controls system.
  • Programs and maintains various PLCs and HMIs. Supports operations and engineering through the MOC process, ongoing maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop SCADA system master plans, performing needs assessments and providing innovative solutions involving SCADA systems, instrumentation, communication networks and cyber security practices.
  • Introduce and articulate advanced concepts in hardware, network, and SCADA design solutions to influence strategy and future direction of the network.
  • Provide advanced level solutions for hardware components, network equipment, and control system components.
  • Performs presentations of complex technical findings and developments.
  • Develop creative solutions that will lead to a cohesive, structured and secured environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Heavy Manufacturing Environment. MKC houses different machinery, equipment, processes, and chemicals which produce potential hazards in the work environment such as: ergonomic, chemical, machine point of operation, and powered industrial vehicle traffic. These hazards are controlled through means of engineering controls, such as machine guarding, and administrative controls, such as safety policies and programs. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to noisy. In certain areas of the facility, employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as Hearing Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety Toe Shoes, and hand protection.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to regularly walk throughout all the manufacturing facilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on an equivalent basis.

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or controls engineering or similar engineering function.
  • Minimum 5 years industry experience in electrical, instrumentation and industrial controls engineering required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.

JOB SKILLS

  • Subject matter expert knowledge in fundamental engineering concepts related to assembly, calibration, and testing of analog / digital electrical systems and / or computer networks and systems engineering processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of integration of robots to CNC machines and conveyors to automated equipment to high-pressure die casting machines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SCADA systems, programming and configuration Significant experience supporting secure, highly reliable, network-based control systems.
  • Experience in automating assembly processes, preferably in die casting.
  • Must be proficient in PLC logic and programming.
  • Strong organizational and time management prowess with the ability to work effectively to meet completion targets.
  • Demonstrate high commitment to quality and ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving expertise.
  • Ability to mentor and lead teams with outstanding communication skills.
