UM, Capital Region, a member of the University of Maryland Medical System is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider to join the Sickle Cell team to meet increasing clinical demand and expanding neuroscience roles at UM Capital Region Health located in its new state-of-the-art facility in Largo, MD.

Job specifics:

  • Join a team that provides many aspects of sickle cell care to an underserved population in Prince George’s County.
    • The APP will be trained to cover all aspects of the sickle cell team including the sickle cell clinic, inpatient consults, infusions, and the continuity care clinic.
    • The APP will have the opportunity to cross cover other APP lead service lines.
  • Performs routine and expanded job descriptions as listed in the provider's delegation agreement on file with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing. Under the direction of a physician, the APP will:
    • Provide comprehensive and episodic care to patients with sickle cell disease and those presenting in sickle cell crisis.
    • Provide routine health maintenance for patients with sickle cell disease.
    • Provide chronic pain management with appropriate opioid management and documentation.
    • See consults in ED and on inpatient floors. Rounds on inpatients on the sickle cell service.
    • Assists with the management of chronic transfusion patients.
    • Obtain medical histories, examines patients, orders and interprets tests, and orders treatments. 
    • Communicate effectively with attending physicians, other medical teams, team members, and patients and their families.
    • Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team including psychiatry, nursing, social work, community health worker, hematologist, and place necessary referrals.
    • Educate and counsel patients and families regarding the sickle cell disease process and expected outcomes.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the employee’s supervisor, executive service leader, or a healthcare provider.
  • Patient prescription tasks including:
    • Writing prescription and refills for clinic patients.
    • Document narcotics in an opioid database in collaboration with other prescribers.
    • Appropriate opioid management including having patients sign pain contracts, refilling medications, and tracking prescribed narcotics.
  • Demonstrates competence and skill in required tasks and procedures.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in the required subspecialty.
    • Completes required CME/CEU hours for licensure compliance.
    • CME/CEU focus on sickle cell and related topics.
    • Performs according to Maryland Board of Physician or Board of Nursing standards and expanded job description procedural protocols.
    • Maintains a procedure complication rate less than the national average.
  • Facilitates excellence in quality assurance and the delivery of patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization.
    • Provides optimal quality of patient care while following safety guidelines.
    • Contributes to cohesive group relations; uses open communication, maintains professional and collaborative interactions with other staff members, works to calmly resolve problems in and between departments.
    • Demonstrates commitment to department and organizational core values.
    • Follows Capital Region Health’s High Reliability Organization principles of patient safety, zero harm, professionalism, and mutual respect for patients, families, and coworkers.
  • Participates in APP Council meetings, Sickle cell team meetings, APP educational opportunities, and other learning opportunities as they arise.
  • Engages in leadership activities including but not limited to APP representation on committees, training and education of other APPs, or specific team events.
    • Provides presentations on sickle cell disease for other health care professionals.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PAs: Bachelor’s degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician’s Assistants are required. Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • NPs: Bachelor’s degree, RN experience, and completion of Acute Nurse Practitioner degree. Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • One year of sickle cell experience is preferred.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from UM Capital Region Health’s Medical Staff Office and maintenance of BLS /ACLS certification is required.
  • Salary is commensurate with clinical experience.
