Job Summary

The Sheet Metal Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing the sheet metal work on assigned projects, ensuring that all tasks are completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards. This role involves coordination with project managers, general contractors, and crew members to maintain efficient workflow, manage materials and equipment, and uphold safety protocols.

 

Job Duties

General Responsibilities:

  • Time Entry: Accurately track and record crew members' working hours.

  • Safety: Enforce and maintain strict adherence to safety protocols.

  • Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, general contractors, and the crew to ensure smooth project execution.

  • Material Procurement: Ensure that all necessary materials are available on-site when needed.

  • Rental Equipment: Manage the procurement, use, and maintenance of rental equipment.

  • Housekeeping: Ensure that the work area is clean and organized throughout the project.

Pre-Mobilization:

  • Scope Review: Review the scope of work and project plans with the project manager.

  • Schedule & Manpower: Assist the project manager in developing the project schedule and determining manpower requirements.

  • Material Storage: Secure a Connex (storage container) for material storage if needed.

  • Equipment Confirmation: Confirm the required rental equipment and ensure its delivery for the first day it is needed on the project.

  • Consumables & Materials: Confirm that all necessary consumables and materials are on-site before the crew arrives.

  • Tool Inventory: Inventory all tools in the company job box, ensuring they are in proper working order.

  • Trailer Loading: Load the job trailer with essential tools, job boxes, and equipment required for the project.

  • Coordination Meetings: Determine with the project manager who will attend coordination meetings with the general contractor (superintendent only, or both superintendent and project manager).

  • Arrival on Project:

  • Introduction: Introduce yourself to the general contractor and project staff.

  • Safety Orientation: Conduct any required safety training or orientation for the project.

  • Project Layout Familiarization: Familiarize yourself with the project layout, including dumpsters, traffic hazards, staging areas, roof access, building access, evacuation plans, and general hazards.

  • Work Area Setup: Establish and coordinate an approved work area for the crew’s daily reporting, ensuring it does not conflict with other trades on the project.

Beginning of Workday:

  • Punctuality: Arrive on time or early to meet with the crew at the designated meeting area.

  • Task Distribution: Distribute daily work tasks among the crew, ensuring they understand how to complete them safely, timely, and professionally.

  • Safety Briefing: Conduct a brief safety discussion every morning; complete toolbox talks once a week.

  • Tool Management: Check out tools and equipment to crew members as needed, keeping track of company assets.

  • Crew Engagement: Ensure the crew is fully engaged in their assigned tasks.

  • Material Check: Monitor consumables and materials to prevent shortages and order replacements as needed.

Throughout the Day:

  • Forward Planning: Work ahead of the crew by performing layout, resolving conflicts, and preparing for upcoming tasks.

  • Task Monitoring: Ensure the crew is working efficiently, safely, and professionally.

  • Conflict Resolution: Assist the crew in resolving any issues they encounter.

  • Hands-On Support: Provide additional help to crew members when needed.

End of Day:

  • Cleanup: Ensure the crew begins cleaning their work areas 15 minutes before clock-out time.

  • Progress Documentation: Walk the work areas, take pictures of completed work, and upload them to the project folder on Procore.

  • Trash Disposal: Ensure all trash is disposed of in the appropriate dumpsters.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all electric equipment is plugged in for charging and check/refill fuel levels for gas- or diesel-powered equipment.

  • Daily Reporting: Complete a brief daily report for the project manager.

  • Tool Return: Ensure all tools and equipment are returned and checked back in at the end of the day.

  • End-of-Day Briefing: Hold a brief discussion with the crew about the day’s tasks and any safety issues encountered.

  • Sign-Out: Have the crew sign out at the end of the day.

Safety Requirements:

  • PPE Compliance: Ensure the crew is always wearing the appropriate PPE for their tasks (safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, pants, and a high-visibility shirt with at least 4” sleeves).

  • Training: Ensure all crew members have proper training for the tools and equipment they are using.

  • Equipment Inspection: Verify that all rental equipment is functioning properly and report any issues for repair.

  • Fall Protection: Ensure all crew members are 100% tied off when working in a lift or near any leading edge with a height greater than 6 feet without a safety barrier.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Sheet Metal Superintendent or similar supervisory role in construction.

  • Strong understanding of construction safety protocols and procedures.

  • Ability to read and interpret project plans and specifications.

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.

  • Proficient in project management software, such as Procore.

  • Physical ability to perform the required tasks, including working at heights and managing heavy materials.
