Role: Certified Peer Specialist

Location: 177 E 122nd St, New York, NY 10035

Facility: Comprehensive Treatment Institute (Treatment Services)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9:00a – 5:00p. Hybrid Schedule.

Salary: $45,000 - 50,000 salary

Job Duties:

·         Facilitate engagement by forging strong connections with participants and families within Harlem, the Bronx, and surrounding communities.

·         Conduct outreach activities to promote awareness of available services, encourage help-seeking, and at times serve as a bridge between treatment team and participants experiencing ambivalence about substance use treatment.

·         Will be certified to train and distribute Naloxone kits to individuals and families.

·         Develop authentic, meaningful relationships with participants through empathy, sharing experiences, listening, and collaborating with genuine interest.

·         Understand, share, and discuss multiple frameworks for understanding life experiences such as substance abuse, psychosis, and more.

·         Utilize language in service of listening to understand and making space for complex personal stories of recovery and resilience.

·         Advocate with and for participants in larger community and on the team.

·         Collaborate with participants to clarify personal visions and develop their wellness toolkit.

·         Collaborate with team members to support participants in strengthening self-awareness, life skills, and connection to resources and community outside of the internal team.

·         Positively influence team culture through advocacy for clients, promoting a youth-friendly approach and encouraging the use of recovery-oriented language.

·         Report safety and other concerns to the team immediately.

·         Document notes from all visits/interactions/meetings with participants. Co-collaboration on reporting with program participants is encouraged.

Skills/Requirements:

·         Certification as a Peer Specialist is required (CRPA, CRPA-P, NYCPS, or NYCPS-P).

·         2+ years of experience with substance use/mental health self-help activities, peer support/advocacy, or participant-run organizations highly desired.

·         Role requires significant travel to engage clients at shelters, in the community, and other settings – up to 75% (within Harlem).

·         Ability to relate to and build relationships with youth/young adults.

·         Understanding of community base and available community resources.

·         Positive change/productivity toward personal recovery is a plus.

·         Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to empathize with, relate to, and effectively work with participants of mental health services.

·         Ability/willingness to disclose personal recovery story (where appropriate) for the purposes of empowerment.

·         Excellent judgment and ability to understand professional boundaries.

·         Adhere to on-call cell phone system to facilitate crisis intervention, emergencies, and other situations requiring immediate action when assigned.
