The Trade Compliance Operative Specialist will have operational interactions with U.S. authorities, suppliers (e.g., clarifying trade data attributes), and customers (e.g., related to export control/restricted party screening). This role provides guidance to service providers, monitors and optimizes internal processes, and ensures accurate and compliant documentation in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
The Trade Compliance Operative Specialist is responsible for managing and maintaining essential customs data, including HS Codes, Country of Origin determinations, regulatory classifications, and restricted party screening results, while supporting data analytics and compliance reporting. Additionally, this position coordinates closely with customs brokers and freight forwarders to facilitate efficient operations and ensure adherence to trade regulations, serving as a resource for all departments impacted by trade compliance.
Job Duties
Act as a primary interface with external partners (e.g., brokers, third-party suppliers) and internal departments (e.g., Sales, Procurement, R&D, Logistics, Regulatory, and Legal).
Provide guidance to service providers and brokers facilitating customs and FDA clearance, ensuring compliant documentation is used by affiliated companies for imports.
Maintain master data for customs and foreign trade, including but not limited to HS Codes, Country of Origin, Dual-Use/ECCN, and FDA codes, supporting accurate and efficient import and export processes.
Optimize documentation and processes, and assist management with audit processes and inquiries from CBP, FDA, Census, BIS, FCC, USDA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory agencies.
Coordinate with internal and external departments, service providers, brokers, and forwarders to ensure efficient and compliant export processing, accurate documentation, and process optimization.
Assist in export control classification (ECCN), support licensing determinations, and ensure compliance with Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR) and EEI (Electronic Export Information) filings, including those handled by freight forwarders and carriers.
Confirm acceptable customs valuation methods and develop classifications for quality, clinical, and R&D samples, components, and finished goods exports in conjunction with subject matter experts.
Conduct restricted party screening using a pre-developed system (SAP GTS), clear false positives, and escalate cases where needed.
Support audit processes for exports, ensuring compliance with sanctions regulations.
Gather and report compliance metrics using Excel, Power BI, or Tableau to support trade/import/export compliance insights and business intelligence.
Train in and lead HTS classifications and ECCN determinations, gaining proficiency in SAP and SAP GTS for managing holds on imported/exported goods and screening blocks.
Maintain compliance records in accordance with company policies and current laws and regulations.
Coordinate with customs brokers and freight forwarders to ensure alignment on compliance procedures.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Political Science, Public Governance, Law, Engineering, or a related field.
5+ years of relevant experience in trade compliance or import/export operations.
Advanced knowledge of classifications, export controls, and licensing requirements.
Experience in FDA-regulated industries (e.g., medical devices, pharmaceuticals).
Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data and identify actionable insights.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners.
Highly organized, process-oriented, and adaptable to shifting priorities; a collaborative team player with a focus on compliance and operational efficiency.
Desired Skills
Proven track record of innovation, enhancing compliance, and implementing process improvements.
Knowledge of SAP GTS and MS Office applications, including data management tools such as Excel, Power BI, or Tableau.
