JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT TEACHER

REPORTS TO: Head Teacher

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

To assist the Head Teacher in providing a warm, nurturing, and safe environment in which children's self-concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma
  • One-year supervised experience working with children.
  • Commitment to obtain 3 credits in state approved courses that pertain to school age childcare, until a minimum of 12 credits is reached

  • Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of play equipment.
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position which may require talking, hearing, lifting unspecified weights, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, stretching, crawling, pushing and/or pulling
  • Must be able to be mobile and/or manipulate the environment to meet the needs of the children; occasionally sit, climb, or balance.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, follow instructions and procedure manuals
  • Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Must have ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Understand the Head Teacher role and assist the Head Teacher in implementation of developmentally appropriate principles, through planning daily activities that meet the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs of both the individual and the group -SEL, STEAM, multicultural, literacy and Service-Learning activities

  • Participate in monthly staff development activities and workshops, and regular, scheduled planning/training meetings with the Head Teacher.

  • Responsible for the accurate implementation and completion of required programming and documentation (i.e., Kindertales- Behavior, sign ins and outs, etc.)

  • Adhere to all policies and procedures in CYS Staff Handbook

Children:
  • Ensure the safety and security of all children, always maintain visual supervision.
  • Supervise children's activities and encourage their participation in activities. Enforce safety practices and intervene in a positive manner when children are likely to injure themselves or each other. Consult with Head Teacher when need arises to changes schedules or scheduling meetings with parents/school personnel.

  • Assist children to learn problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Use appropriate and positive discipline, ensuring that discipline is consistent and follows program guidelines.

  • Assist children to learn self-control. Observe and document significant individual and/or group behavior on Kindertales. Report to Head Teacher any unusual incidents or accidents.

  • Be a positive role model in attitude, behavior, and language. Maintain Confidentiality as per program guidelines.

  • Be very aware of who has special needs, allergies, restrictions, and care plans. Be diligent in following plans and ensuring the wellbeing of the identified need.

  • Immediately report any suspected incident of child abuse or neglect to your immediate supervisor and Director. Follow protocols for reporting to the DCF hotline.

Classroom and Play Yard Duties:
  • Prepare supplies, activities and the classroom for the day and facilitate as scheduled. If needed transport supplies to the sites.

  • Assist the Head Teacher with documentation including attendance.

  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of environments that provide choices and variety that are appropriate to children's developmental potential.

  • Assist with the maintenance of an orderly, clean environment for children. Report and remove (when possible) potential hazards

  • Know all State/WHCH regulations, routines, policies, and procedures regarding the program and assist the Head Teacher with ensuring their implementation. Must maintain compliance with OEC and BCIS Registries.

  • Enlist the cooperation of the children whenever possible.

  • Ensure that all students have the opportunity to pick their own activity from a variety of open centers.

  • Must be flexible about site assignments and availability to work on extended days and the summer program. Extended days being those days when school is closed, and Child Care is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • Other duties as assigned
