LINE AND STAFF RELATIONSHIPS
Directly responsible to the Director of Financial Aid

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for helping students and their families navigate the financial aid process for college or other educational institutions. This position will provide information and guidance on available financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants, and loans. They will also assist students in completing financial aid applications, reviewing eligibility requirements, and understanding the terms and conditions of different financial aid programs. Additionally, the financial aid counselor may also help students explore alternative funding options. They often work closely with other departments, such as admissions and student services, to ensure a smooth and efficient financial aid process for students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY

  • Provides information and guidance to students and their families about financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants, and loans.
  • Assists students with verification documents, the FAFSA application, suspension appeal forms, and needs analysis forms and any other questions students may have regarding financial aid in general.
  • Supports Student Success Coaches in assisting prospective, admitted, and enrolled students in matters pertaining to the various federal, state, and local financial assistance programs.
  • Serves as the point of contact for recipients of scholarships and veteran benefits.
  • Completes Financial Needs Analysis forms for students and returns them to appropriate destination by fax or mail.
  • Serves as point of contact for In-House Verification Forms and Veterans Benefits Inquiries and submits to Inceptia and Veterans Affairs for processing.
  • Checks FAA to CPS to ensure students have completed the FAFSA application correctly and all steps have been completed to receive financial aid.
  • Monitors and responds to the office main line, voicemail, and email account, assisting students with questions and if unable to assist, routes them to the appropriate person.
  • Assists other staff with additional projects as needed.
  • Offers assistance to other associates if all other work is complete.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Director of Financial Aid.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Associate’s degree and 5 years of experience in higher education may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience with Title IV funding processes and/or knowledge of automated financial aid systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BANNER experience.
  • Strong customer service and presentation skills.
