Job Title: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) is a certified teacher who travels to students' assigned schools to provide direct and/or consultative services related to vision loss. A thorough knowledge of visual impairments and blindness, its implications for early development growth and learning, along with strong skills in assistive technology and teaching the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) is required. Experience in assessing students' functional vision and knowledge of cortical visual impairment are essential. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to provide ongoing support and consultation to school staff. Orientation and Mobility certification is desirable but not required. A state Braille competency test is required.

Responsibilities:
  1. Appropriate Learning Environment: Assists in determining and procuring classroom equipment and materials necessary for students with visual impairments to learn, including ensuring necessary room modifications and lighting changes.
  2. Provides the classroom teacher with information regarding specialized strategies needed to teach a student with visual impairment.
  3. Consults with other instructional staff to incorporate the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) into the instructional setting.
  4. Provides adapted materials to the classroom teacher.
  5. Provides Braille, recorded/enlarged materials, and/or tactual symbols as appropriate for each child.
  1. Direct Instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC): Monitors students' progress in academic subjects and provides instruction in compensatory skills as needed.
  2. Teaches Braille reading and writing, low vision devices, typing/keyboarding, and other necessary skills.
  1. Assessment and Evaluation: Performs Functional Vision and Learning Media Assessments (FVA/LMA) on new referrals and re-evaluations.
  2. Interprets eye medical reports as they relate to educational environments.
  3. Contributes to the development of the IEP/IFSP.
  1. Support Services: Provides assistance to students with visual impairments in understanding their attitudes and facilitates social integration.
  2. Provides training and support to parents of students with visual impairments.
  1. Administrative Duties: Provides updated student information, submits requests for instructional materials, and informs staff of students' progress.
  1. Liaison Between Community and School: Provides information about district and/or regional vision programs to the schools and community.
  1. Professional Standards: Maintains a reference library and acquires information about current research and technology.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of subject areas appropriate to assignment and effective instructional techniques.
  • Skill in reading, writing, and oral communications.
  • Ability to manage student behavior and maintain a safe learning environment.

Criminal justice fingerprint and background check.
