JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Postdoctoral Scholar Position is available starting January 1, 2025, in the Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University. The Postdoctoral Scholar will join a collaborative project between Penn State and Washington University in St. Louis to study how planet composition influences whether plate tectonics can develop. The project will involve studying how varying the relative proportions of primary mineral phases in the mantle and their strength contrast influences the ability of weak, localized shear zones to form, an essential component for the operation of plate tectonics.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will work primarily with Prof. Brad Foley at Penn State to:

  1. Develop theory of two-phase grain size evolution and phase mixing.
  2. Implement grain size evolution theory into mantle convection models.
  3. Use numerical models of mantle convection to study the conditions that lead to the development of mobile lid-style tectonics.
  4. Work with experimentalists at Washington University to improve the grain size evolution theory and incorporate new effects seen in rock deformation experiments.

Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Theoretical and numerical model development.
  2. Presentation of results at scientific meetings.
  3. Preparation of scientific publications.
  4. Mentoring of junior scientists (graduate students and undergraduate REU students) involved in the project.

The candidate for this position should have a strong background in geodynamics or rock mechanics, along with advanced scientific computing and math skills. Previous experience with numerical modeling of mantle convection or ductile rock deformation is a plus. Research experience and communication skills necessary for working in interdisciplinary, multi-institutional teams is an advantage. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. (or have completed all the requirements by the time of appointment) in a relevant field (geophysics, geodynamics, rock mechanics) and demonstrated effective writing skills through high-quality reports and publications.

The successful candidate must be committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community and will be welcomed into an active community of planetary science and geodynamics researchers at Penn State. The Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity to join interdisciplinary research centers like the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds or Planetary Systems Science Center.

To apply, please include the following in a single PDF document:

  1. CV
  2. The names and contact information for 2 professional references
  3. A cover letter (2-page max, 12-pt font) that outlines 1) your research interests, 2) previous research, and 3) how your experience aligns with the position summary and requirements

This is a term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with possibility for renewal.

The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
