SUBJECT: Available Position - Canine (K-9) Trainer
An opening currently exists within the Murfreesboro Police Department for a Canine (K-9) Trainer. The officer selected to fill this position must currently be a certified trainer or certifying official with a nationally recognized canine training association. The officer must also have a background in law enforcement canine training techniques, such as obedience training, patrol work, non-aggressive tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detections, and cadaver detection.
This position is open to internal and external applicants and will follow new hire guidelines. To apply go to www.murfreesborotn.gov no later than December 31, 2024, by 4:00 pm. Please read this memorandum for three (3) consecutive days at roll call so all officers may have the opportunity to apply.

P.O.S.T. CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS WILL BE HIRED AS POLICE OFFICERS WITH A STARTING SALARY BASED ON EXPERIENCE.
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the city limits.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIESEssential Functions:
- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Patrols assigned zone and interacts with citizens.
- Responds to call for service.
- Prevents, detects, and investigates criminal activity.
- Enforces state and federal laws, city ordinances, and issues citations.
- Assists other officers in active investigations.
- Investigates crash and crime scenes, documents calls, files reports, and prepares case files for judicial proceedings.
- Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Issues search warrants and conducts searches of persons and property.
- Prepares court cases, communicates with district attorney's office, and appears in court to testify.
- Inspects and maintains assigned equipment.
- Attends training sessions.
- Provides security at community events.
- Reads and understands technical instructions, procedures manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composes routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters, with proper format; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
- Understands and validly enforces federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good judgment and reasonable discretion.
- Possesses the temperament and good judgment to effectively and diplomatically deal with all members of the public, including those who are irate and unreasonable.
- Performs other work as assigned.
Additional Essential Functions for Canine Trainer:
- Is currently a certified trainer or certifying official with a nationally recognized canine training association.
- Background in law enforcement canine training techniques, such as obedience training, patrol work, non-aggressive tracking, narcotic detection, explosive detections, and cadaver detection.
- Participates in the selection and training of a canine. Establishes and attends formal training as necessary to prepare the canine for duty.
- Hosts and instructs weekly training for all Murfreesboro canine teams and other department members as needed.
- Creates and maintains all training records for Murfreesboro Police Department canine teams.
- Maintains yearly certification for each canine team discipline through a nationally recognized canine training association.
- Maintains records on K9 use including, but not limited to, training, certification(s), and deployments.
- Coordinates veterinarian care, immunizations, routine care, and other requirements for canines.
- Serves as the liaison on matters pertaining to the K9 unit.
- Provides guidance and professional development to canine handlers.
- Maintains and oversees the care and maintenance of training equipment.
- Completes and disseminates statistical reports as assigned.
- Ensures all canine handlers complete the proper documentation regarding canine use.
- Establish positive relationships within Murfreesboro Police canine teams.
- Law Enforcement Duties: An emphasis on understanding current Fourth Amendment updates, law enforcement canine TCA updates, and court rulings that may affect the canine program.
- Develop partnerships with other law enforcement agencies for additional training opportunities.
Physical and Sensory Demands:
- Possess the physical ability to run and the strength to apprehend law violators.
- Sits, stands, bends, stoops, reaches, pushes, and pulls; frequently lifts objects and persons; climbs stairs, walks, and runs intermittently.
- Operates law enforcement equipment including, but not limited to, police vehicles with all emergency equipment, mobile radios, hand-held radios, recorders, fingerprint equipment, cameras, video cameras, copy machines, facsimile machines, personal computers and peripheral equipment, radar equipment, and both lethal and non-lethal weapons such as pistols, rifles, shotguns, ASP batons and OC spray.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence; blood borne pathogens.
- Involves being exposed to all types of weather conditions, some of which will be inclement.
- Work will involve exposure to dangerous conditions and situations and frequent exposure to violence.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Requires a certification as a Police Officer.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces. As required by T.C.A. * 38-8-105(d), an officer who is a permanent legal resident as of the officer's employment start date must apply for or obtain U.S. citizenship within six (6) years of the officer's employment start date; failure to obtain U.S. citizenship within six (6) years of the officer's employment start date shall constitute grounds for termination of the officer's employment.
- Must meet minimum visual requirement of 20/30 each eye corrected and have enough visual acuity to act to protect self and others in emergency situations uncorrected.
- Meet all lawful qualifications established by Tennessee law to be certified by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission ("P.O.S.T."), T.C.A. Section 38-8-106 and regulations as same may be amended.
School Resource Officer additional Requirements and Experience:
- Required a minimum of (3) three years of full-time experience as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer or the equivalent certification by another state or federal agency and (3) three years of full-time experience.
- Prior experience or certification as a School Resource Officer is encouraged, but not required.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission P.O.S.T. certification.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be certified by a Tennessee Licensed Health Care Provider qualified in the psychiatric or psychological fields as being free from any disorder, as set forth in the current edition of the DSM that would, in the professional judgment of the examiner, impair the subject's ability to perform any essential function of the job.
School Resource Officer additional:
- SRO Certification as required by TCA 49-6-4217.
- Must successfully complete the Field Training and Evaluation Program before being assigned to the School Resource Officer Position.
Hiring Process for Police Officers: Our hiring process begins with a physical ability test (PT). Those that pass the PT move on to a written test. Those that pass the written test move forward to interviews. After interviews, those selected will move forward to the background screening. After the background, the applicant will move forward to psychological testing and medical/drug and alcohol screenings. Once all of those are successfully passed, the applicant will be hired.
