Crew Leader

Provides working supervision for a crew involved in construction, repair and maintenance of City streets and related structures. Maintains supplies of required materials and tools on an assigned truck; checks out additional tools and equipment. Performs daily operative maintenance on assigned trucks and equipment. Lays blocks, walls, rip rap and performs other masonry work; cleans catch basins; cuts grass, brush and cleans ditches; lays asphalt, pours and finishes concrete. Transports equipment, materials, and work crews to work site. Loads and secures light and medium earth-moving equipment on trailers for transport to work site. Operates a dump truck to haul gravel and materials to work site. Operates various types of earth moving equipment as necessary for job completion. Directs work crews at work sites. Drives truck with trailers to transport light and medium earth-moving equipment to work site. Computes the amount of material required for each repair project. Notifies Drainage and Streets Supervisor of any unusual problems, including equipment breakdowns, accidents, injuries to crew members, disciplinary problems and street closings required to complete repair work. Ensures the placement of safety devices at work sites to prevent accidents and injuries. Must be available for call rotation as assigned by supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned and/or required.
QualificationsHigh school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, e.g., machinery, equipment operation, etc., plus one year of experience with street and/or drainage, and one year of related supervisory/lead experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. CDL Class A is required. Knowledge of equipment operations and methods, materials and tools used in street maintenance and repair work. Skill in the use of street maintenance of light and medium vehicles, including dump trucks and street sweepers. Skilled in the operation of street maintenance hand and power tools, including jackhammer, concrete saw, and shovel. Knowledge of concrete finishing methods and equipment. The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 65 pounds and occasionally may be asked to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Ability to maintain accurate records, type and enter data accurately. Ability to effectively communicate on a one-on-one basis with others. Ability to maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, department officials and the public. Ability to report to work each scheduled day, and on time.
