The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Lead Protection Engineer (Hydro & Pumping) in the Automation, Integration, and System Protection (AISP) Department. The Lead Protection Engineer (Hydro & Pumping) acts as a technical leader and is responsible for electrical design, development, and commissioning activities for protective relay replacement projects. The role consists of planning, scheduling, conducting, and/or coordinating detailed phases of assigned project work. This position will require travel throughout the state of California primarily working in substations and hydroelectric facilities. An ideal candidate for this hybrid position would be located in the greater Sacramento area.

What You'll Do

Provides technical guidance for engineers/technicians, makes design recommendations, performs design reviews, field demolition and construction support, leads onsite commissioning activities, and provides troubleshooting support for protective relay replacement projects. Depending on experience, may review relay setting development and coordination, perform protection system event analysis, develop relay test plans, and/or SCADA/HMI design.

What We Expect from You

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required. ABET accredited program or equivalent required.
  • PE registration is required.
  • 6+ years of engineering and commissioning experience.
  • Effective mentoring skills are preferred.
  • Experience reviewing and/or producing one-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel elevations, and bills of materials.
  • Knowledge of HV substation equipment, MV electrical (apparatus) equipment including station service, 15 kV switchgear and protective relaying.
  • Experience performing onsite commissioning in one or more of the following areas: CT/PT wiring injection/verification, protective relay test, protective relay end-to-end test, functional verification of protection schemes, and CT/PT load verification is preferred.
  • Experience providing onsite demolition and construction engineering support is a plus.
  • Experience applying protection system engineering practices and principles for HV substation and transmission equipment is a plus.
  • Familiar with application of industry standards, such as NERC PRC, is a plus.
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems and programming is a plus.
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and California Electrical Code (CEC) is a plus.
  • Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)
  • Ability to work in a high-paced team environment.
  • Willing to travel 30-50% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving standards.
  • Must have permanent authorization to work in the US.

Additional Opportunity Details:
Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $127,500 - $172,500
Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your job-specific skills, education, training, job location, number of years of experience related to this role and comparison to other employees already in this role.
