PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Located in the Harrisonburg, VA facility and reporting to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for evaluating equipment failures and utilizing engineering experience and training to develop solutions for potential failures on production equipment and related support systems, buildings, and facilities.

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing layouts, leading equipment installations, and other general engineering tasks. Additionally, the mechanical engineer is responsible for the monitoring of the predictive maintenance program including introducing changes based upon failure modes, performance, end-of-life, and results from software and third-party vendors. Working with Maintenance Leadership, the mechanical engineer is expected to ensure successful implementation and application of the predictive maintenance program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The mechanical engineer will work independently with other plant personnel to oversee various types of equipment installations as well as the implementation and use of the predictive maintenance program using problem-solving skills to drive equipment delay and downtime improvement. Specifically, this role requires someone who has experience in the following areas:

  • Manages work through a CMMS.
  • Evaluates equipment failure modes and utilizes engineering experience and training to develop solutions for eliminating/mitigating potential failure. Reviews engineering specifications/drawings and proposes design modifications to improve reliability within cost and other performance requirements.
  • Alters and modifies current equipment to meet safety requirements and/or to eliminate malfunctions.
  • Acts as a liaison between the company and contractors, vendors, OEMs, and suppliers.
  • Estimates budgets and scope of projects.
  • Reviews OEM maintenance program and makes recommendations for changes to recommended intervals based upon equipment age, condition, and reliability.
  • Monitors equipment performance and evaluates equipment history and failure trends to determine sources of poor component performance.
  • Partners with local and platform maintenance teams to develop reliability best practices and collaboratively work through common issues.
  • Estimates and defines requirements for total labor, materials, special tools, equipment, and skill sets required to complete requested work, including routine repairs, preventive maintenance/repairs, and complex projects such as plant shutdowns, plant improvement projects, etc.
  • Obtains and organizes all information required for the work being performed (i.e., drawings, diagrams, vendor manuals, supplemental materials/tools, and special procedures).
  • Obtains appropriate permits necessary for building activities and equipment installations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced maintenance work process knowledge and experience.
  • Use of computer-aided design (CAD) software and other tools to create functional, effective, and cost-effective designs.
  • Advanced knowledge of parts inventory management and mechanical and electrical equipment design reliability principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of Statistical Process Control and Six Sigma methodology (DMAIC).
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). MVP One experience preferred.
  • Proven mechanical aptitude.
  • Must agree to follow safety guidelines and wear applicable safety equipment; e.g., safety glasses, side shields, approved safety shoes, and other PPE as needed.
  • Excellent decision-making skills in times of ambiguity.
  • Experience working with vendors.
  • Must possess shift and schedule flexibility of regular time as well as any shift that may include off-hours and/or weekends, as needed.
  • Detail-oriented with strong 5S and organizational skills.
  • Personal computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CMMS.
  • Experience working in an Industrial Maintenance environment preferred.
  • Ability to read/interpret mechanical and electrical drawings/schematics.
  • Knowledge of Preventive Maintenance and repair procedures of industrial equipment and facilities systems. Printing experience is a plus.
  • Methods, materials, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the installation, maintenance, repair, alteration, replacement, and fabrication of industrial mechanical and electrical equipment.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or 10 years of relevant experience in an engineering role.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
