Instructor and Laboratory Coordinator, Organic Chemistry

The University of Portland located in Portland, Oregon, USA invites applications for a faculty position as an Instructor and Laboratory Coordinator in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry to begin August 15, 2025.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides students with active, engaging, and hands-on learning experiences with American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degree options in chemistry and biochemistry. The candidate will play a role in shaping the development of the program and its students.
Core Duties
University of Portland faculty teach, advise and serve the department, the College, and the University. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching, including attention to evidence-based instructional practices in the context of a primarily undergraduate teaching institution.
The successful candidate will primarily coordinate and teach organic chemistry labs and may teach organic chemistry lecture and biochemistry courses. They will also serve on departmental committees. While instructors typically teach four 3-credit courses (or equivalent) per semester, this position will include administrative responsibilities for coordinating organic chemistry lab courses, considered the equivalent of one course per semester. These administrative duties include curriculum development, supervision of laboratory preparation and clean-up, instrument maintenance, ordering chemicals and supplies, and hiring and supervision of adjunct instructors and student teaching assistants.
Education & Experience
- Required: Ph.D. in organic chemistry or a related field or evidence of completion of degree by August 1, 2025 or a master’s degree in organic chemistry or a related field and two years of related professional experience.
- Required: Teaching or instructional experience.
- Preferred: Experience teaching undergraduate organic chemistry or biochemistry lecture and lab courses, including developing lab experiments.
- Preferred: Experience maintaining and organizing labs.

Physical Requirements
- Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork.
- Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.
- Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.
