We are currently hiring Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) for our Professional Services team. Our Professional Services team offers abstracting services to our clients to catch up on abstracting backlogs, temporarily supplement current staff, or provide a more permanent solution through outsourcing.

We are looking for individuals who are highly motivated, obsessed with data quality and want to be a member of a team. We are hiring full-time and part-time positions, with the option of working 20, 30, or 40 hours per week. Qualified candidates who join our team as full-time employees, working 40 hours per week, are eligible for a $3,500 sign-on bonus

These are remote, work from home positions with a full team of experienced ODS-C to provide training, guidance and support.

Job Summary:

Abstracting oncology data in compliance with state and national standards. This individual is responsible for meeting productivity standards while assuring the confidentiality, accuracy and timeliness of all cancer-related health information encountered. Casefinding and follow-up duties are considered on a contract-to-contract basis.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identify, compile, update and maintain patient data from a range of relevant sources, including all hospitals and medical clinics and various electronic health care record systems, and follows procedures to facilitate data collection as appropriate.
  • Abstract data into specialized medical software with supporting narrative information for, patient demographics, diagnostic procedures, history and extent of disease, treatments, outcomes, follow-up data, physicians, and related information from various medical records.
  • Assign appropriate codes for treatments, procedures and diagnoses according to coding requirements, classification systems and standard setters.
  • Review data for completeness, consistency, and accuracy, pursuing additional information from data sources as necessary; updates/corrects data as needed.
  • Perform re-abstracting and case finding for special projects as assigned.
  • Performs life-time follow-up on the patients health, vital status, treatment and progression of disease to provide cancer incidence, treatment and outcome information to appropriate data bases, for quality improvement activities, administrative planning and marketing, and support programs.
  • Monthly case finding, review various reports, death certificates, disease indices, radiation oncology treatment records, radiologic diagnoses, or physician logs to identify possible cancer cases.
  • Provide input into study/review planning, report writing, data analysis and prepare reports within the parameters of the studies and other guidelines, under the supervision of manager.
  • Prepare narrative reports and graphic presentations; design tables, charts and graphs of tumor registry data for special studies and annual report as requested.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of medical records and protected health information (PHI).
  • Complete all Case Finding functions as required by contract.
  • Abstract assigned cases (analytic and non-analytic) according to standard criteria established by CoC, SEER and the applicable state cancer registry with an error rate of 5% or less for designated major data elements.
  • Use text to justify coding according to Onco/client specifications.
  • Correct all edit errors at the completion of each abstract and all errors identified during Onco quality review.
  • As assigned, re-abstract cases and document errors/issues as part of the Onco quality review process.
  • Enter complete follow-up information on disease status, vital status, recurrence, subsequent treatment, or other data elements as required by contract.
  • Meet the productivity standard as established for each contract.
  • Maintain compliance with client’s abstracting policies and procedures.
  • Abide by all Onco/client HIPAA regulations.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively within role, independently and with other team members.
  • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills with supervisors and peers and appropriate communication with clients.
  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible to adjust assignments as priorities change.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work with time constraints.
  • Requires the ability to use sound judgement based upon the latest guidelines from standard setters (CoC, SEER and NAACCR), as well as client policies.
  • Passing score (80% minimum) on Onco Pre-employment Coding and Staging Assessment.

Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree required including at least two semesters of human anatomy and physiology and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Minimum 2 years work experience abstracting CoC/NAACCR/NPCR cases preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in case finding, accessioning, abstracting, follow-up and quality control.
  • Current certification by NCRA (Oncology Data Specialist) and obtain CE’s to maintain certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Salary: $28.00 - $35.00 per hour, plus $3,500 sign-on bonus (terms apply)
