New York University’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) is seeking faculty fellows with a strong academic record. CUSP is an interdisciplinary research center located in Downtown Brooklyn, dedicated to the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the service of urban communities globally. Using New York City (NYC) as our laboratory and classroom, we aim to develop novel data- and technology-driven solutions to advance urban understanding and address its complex challenges. CUSP focuses on high-impact areas such as climate change, public health, modern urban infrastructure, and the equitable design, collection, and deployment of urban data and technology.

CUSP strives to benefit NYC and other partners with research that is mission- and impact-oriented, integrating data analytics and technologies for the common good. Our interdisciplinary teams bring together experts from various fields including computer and data science, engineering, and the social sciences.

Expectations

Successful applicants will work on interdisciplinary projects, contributing to methods and foundational knowledge in their disciplines, and to data- and technology-driven applications. Ideal candidates should demonstrate:

  • Evidence of or interest in conducting multi-disciplinary research with broad urban impact
  • Strong publication record
  • Teaching and mentoring experience or interest
  • Interest in grant writing and externally funded research
  • Outreach experience is encouraged but not required.

Applicants must identify at least two CUSP faculty members as mentors, proposing research that spans their expertise. Successful candidates will engage in new or existing projects in CUSP’s strategic areas: public health; climate change and sustainability; modern infrastructure; and urban tech and data science fairness. Methodological interests include data science, ML/AI, urban sensing, and complex systems.

Responsibilities

Conduct research independently and as part of teams; develop funded research proposals; connect CUSP with other Tandon/NYU entities; publish in leading venues; mentor students; and teach up to two courses yearly.

Salary range: In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary is $75k with competitive benefits, plus funds for travel and professional development. Expected start date is January 15, 2025. Positions are full-time, fixed-term with one-year contracts, renewable based on performance.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant field, an active research agenda focused on smart cities or urban science, and a record of transitioning research into practice for urban challenges.
