Job Description:
SUMMARY
Working under the direction of the Manager VI – Community Youth Centers or their representative as designated, the Playground Supervisor accepts supervision of all playground staff, operations, programs and activities. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Drives City vehicle daily to go to all playgrounds sites for delivery, pick up or drop in;
- Understands the work hours of the Summer Playground Supervisor are not standard 8-5pm. There are evenings and weekends included in this job;
- Acts as a role model to park leads, park staff and participants in the program;
- May assist in conducting interviews for all or part of summer playground staff;
- Plans and schedules playground sites field trips and special activities/programs;
- Coordinates activities with other Park Programs, City Departments and local agencies and groups such as Fort Wayne Community School’s Free Lunch Program, Fort Wayne Philharmonic’s Music groups, Science Central, Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, etc.;
- Reviews inventory for arts and crafts, athletic equipment, games and daily use. Submits in writing items to be ordered for the summer;
- Reviews and arranges for printing of any forms, directions or rules and updates Playground Leaders Manuals with manager approval;
- Arranges for or picks up any supplies from Lawton Playground Storage or candy, food, etc. for prizes for special events;
- Visits each playground site (multiple times) daily to check on programs and/or problems.
- Picks up attendance reports on (Monday morning) on a weekly basis;
- Hands out, collects and checks submitted time cards. Keeps accurate records of time worked and amount paid for all staff including self;
- Is available at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday for any staff calling in and not coming to work and after 5pm for carnival nights and other special events.
- Conducts mid-way (4week) and final personnel evaluations for each Leader at collection of last time card;
- Interacts daily at each playground site with staff and participants;
- Provides agenda and conducts playground staff meetings if needed with manager approval;
- Solicits prize donations from area merchants for carnival event and park giveaways;
- Ensures that the carnivals sign, games, prizes and food are at the carnival site and ready prior to the event start time;
- Attends, sets up, and assists sites with their scheduled carnival including any or all other special events that are required;
- Arranges for closing of playground sites/Office and ensures the return of all equipment to Lawton Storage;
- Evaluates all equipment, discards broken and unusable games and pieces. places items back in storage with written documentation of the items, games, etc.;
- Writes and submits monthly Playground Report and weekly numbers report for each playground site as well as a monthly for each and combined;
- Attends Seasonal Employee Training (Bloodborne, Hazardous Communication);
- Reports irregularities and abnormal conditions on the playground/parks to manager and/or Lawton staff;
- Works all required time except for regularly scheduled holidays;
- Complies with dress code for the Summer Playground program; wears a playground staff T-shirt (provided), gym shoes/closed toe shoes and appropriate length shorts;
- Communicates daily and in a professional manner with upper management, supervisor, co-workers, participants, parents, volunteers and patrons of the park;
- Performs duties in accordance with the City’s safety rules and operating regulations and practices;
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbent will supervise up to twenty-four people. The supervision is complex and involves adaptation of practices, procedures and methods.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Baccalaureate and one year experience in supervision, either in a school setting or leisure program;
- General knowledge of working with people including interviewing and evaluating;
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES
- Ability to plan, organize and train staff;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the general public;
- Ability to write coherent reports;
- Ability to assign itinerants to replace absent staff members;
- Ability to solve working problems regarding staff and participants, and follow through by reporting problems;
- Proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interprets common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Indiana Driver's License;
- Certified in First Aid and CPR by the American Heart Association within 2 weeks of employment (provided by the City’s Risk Management Department).
