Job Summary
A University Police Officer will perform general and varied police work in the protection of life and property through overall security measures and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The police officer will have the responsibility to perform routine police assignments received from a dispatcher or a police supervisor. General duties will consist of routine patrol, case investigation, traffic regulation, and crime prevention efforts. The police officer must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies, conducting investigations, and determining the appropriate outcome to such case investigations. Employees may receive special assignments which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge usually acquired through experience as a police officer. Will be required to assist other personnel of the police department in conduction investigations, interviews, interrogations, searches, arrests, referrals, along with associated documentation. Assignments and instruction are received from a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection, and discussion.
Job Duties
Patrol University Property- Patrols University property (including buildings, parking lots, and open areas) and surrounding areas as assigned by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to deter, locate, and apprehend persons committing crimes or unlawful activities.
- Responds to and investigates any call for service, belated or “in progress,” including alarms, burglaries, larcenies, assaults, and alcohol/drug related crimes.
- Responds to medical calls, renders first aid, and arranges for emergency medical treatment.
- Conducts accident investigations and criminal civil investigations to gather, document, and preserve evidence; writes criminal and civil incident reports.
- Counsels, detains, cites, and/or arrests members of the public responsible for criminal activity and makes appropriate dispositions; transports to detoxification, mental health, or medical facilities, or books into jail or youth detention facilities.
- Prepares complete, concise, and accurate case file documentation of investigations including referrals, citations, reports, and court documents.
- Answers questions from students, employees, and the general public regarding laws, ordinances, incidents, or services.
- Provides traffic and crowd control; responds to life-threatening situations; provides non-police related support services as needed.
- Implements district emergency preparedness plan including emergency evacuation plans.
- Attends mandatory department training to maintain required police standards.
- Transports/delivers items to various locations as assigned.
- Responds to subpoenas; testifies in Municipal, Superior, and Federal court as required.
- Special assignments such as emergency disaster planning, cadet program, evidence and property management, crime prevention, gangs, detective work, or specific grant funded assignments.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to complete the Basic Police Certification course in the State of Nebraska within 6 months of employment.
- Valid Nebraska driver’s license required.
