Job Summary

The newborn hearing screener technicians provide technical assistance to staff audiologists in the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program. They perform hearing screening on all newborns in the Mother-Baby unit and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Responsibilities*

  • Provide technical assistance to staff audiologists in the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program.
  • Perform hearing screening on newborns in the Mother-Baby Unit and in the Neonatal Intensive Care unity (NICU) following the established protocol and report results in the electronic patient record, making plans for appropriate follow-up as needed based on results of the screening and risk factors for hearing loss.
  • Communicate screening results with other providers following system-approved methods for insuring patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
  • Follow established infection control procedures.
  • Troubleshoot screening equipment and report problems, track supply inventory, and report other needs to EHDI coordinator.
  • Complete billing documentation for all screening procedures.
  • Work a flexible schedule that may include 1-2 weekends per month and some holidays.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma required
  • Knowledge of computer and systems
  • Excellent customer service skills and general problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates an ability to interact well with patients and families in a respectful and compassionate way
  • Adheres to Michigan Medicine's standard of providing world-class care

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's or Associates Degree or combination of education and experience
  • Experience with direct-patient care
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record System

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
