Program(s): Successful Families Initiative (SFI) (Funded until June 30, 2025 – Contract continuation variable)

Requirements

Bilingual in English and Somali. Additional language preferences include Swahili and May May.

Experience working with youth under 18.

Must pass school background check.

Must possess a valid driver's license and verification of current auto-insurance, and have full use of automobile during work hours.

Program Summary

The Successful Families Initiative (SFI) aims to place children of color on a path to self-sufficiency in Multnomah County by increasing academic achievement and school readiness for these populations through systems change efforts and providing culturally specific and responsive services.

Position Summary

The SFI Youth and Family Advocate will work with IRCO's youth staff, SUN site managers, school administrators, and school staff to build positive relationships and engage students and their families in their school environments in a culturally appropriate way. This position will provide academic advising and conduct after-school group skill-building activities 2 times per week during the school year. The number of youth on caseload is 30, involving regular goal setting, enrolling and facilitating students in academic/enrichment activities, and collaborating with school staff and parents to support student progress. The Advocate will conduct bi-monthly parent engagement activities and quarterly parent group activities during the school year.

Essential Functions
  • Engage up to 30 African Immigrant/Refugee youth in academic advising: developing individualized student plans, tracking academic progress and attendance, and following up with families and school staff.
  • Design, implement, and conduct academic group activities during the school year and summer.
  • Collaborate to build culturally relevant curriculum addressing identified academic gaps.
  • Work with school administration and staff to support families in need and provide outreach.
  • Provide individualized support, resource development, and referral services to families.
  • Perform client intake and assessment.
  • Engage parents positively in their school environment.
  • Conduct family support activities such as home visits and phone outreach.
  • Provide parent educational activities around school topics.
  • Organize and manage educational materials and lesson plans.
  • Plan and chaperone educational outings and field trips.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records.
  • Provide translation and interpretation for families as needed.
  • Compile monthly reports and data for contract reporting.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with collaborative agencies.
  • Participate in meetings, training, and activities supporting IRCO’s goals.
Education & Experience
  • Minimum one year supporting student learning in group settings.
  • Associate degree or equivalent in social services or related field.
  • Experience working within a school or school district.
  • Experience relating to families and community organizing.
  • Knowledge of immigrant and refugee cultures and populations.
  • Bilingual in English and Somali; additional language ability desired.
  • Knowledge of social and human services and referral systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

No supervisory responsibilities, but may orient or train new employees or volunteers.
