Associate Director of Surgical Assistance

- Provides back up for surgical assistance and is able to perform all APP duties as outlined in the respective job description.
- Recruits, hires, and facilitates training and orientation. Manages, recognizes, and rewards performance. Provides ongoing formal and informal performance feedback.
- Assist APPs, CSFAs and RNFAs in clinical integration upon hire and throughout time of employment.
- Identifies APP and surgical assistants’ learning needs and provides learning experiences to meet those needs. Integrates and informs staff of current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care and technological advances into scope of practice.
- Coordinates assignments of preceptors to advanced practice providers. Provides coordination of APP students with hospital, clinic, and university liaisons.
- Identifies opportunities and challenges to promote full scope of practice in the advance practice model.
- Ensures and coordinates standardization of advanced practice processes between patient care services and collaborative teams.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory criteria and maintains credentialing, competencies, and professional standards for all APPs in the service line.
- Provides coordination of coverage during holidays, weekdays, and weekends.
- Engages and empowers staff by sharing decision-making, delegating, providing choice and fostering autonomy and adaptability. Leads and supports staff during periods of transition; communicates purpose and empowers staff to embrace change.
- Contributes to the design, development and implementation of strategic and operational initiatives. Leads staff during the implementation and evaluation of new initiatives.
- Prioritizes competing demands while integrating strategic plan into daily operations.
- Collects data for patient and program evaluation and participates in quality assessment and improvement/patient experience activities.
- Serves as a mentor and role model to all APPs and surgical assistants.
- Serves as a liaison and advocate between the APP and Slocum leadership, staff, and collaborating physicians.
- Facilitates regular team meetings and one-on-one discussions with direct reports.
- Teaches: lectures in continuing education programs, journal clubs, conferences, and provides APPs opportunities for learning.
- Participates in and or coordinates community education programs as a representative of the service line.
- Ensures all actions are in alignment with Slocum’s vision, mission, values, and goals and that APPs and surgical assistants understand their role and contribution.
- Exemplifies professional ethical practice and holds others accountable to do the same.
- Inspires a culture of excellence and accountability by setting clear goals, expectations, and benchmarks for performance.
- Cultivates a climate of professional growth and development to promote excellence, retain talent and develop future leaders.
- Meets regularly with the COO and other members of the management team to discuss management of the practice.
- Develops standardized policies, procedures and changes in clinical operations when necessary or desirable, working collaboratively with other Slocum Directors and the COO.
- Creates and maintains comprehensive APP policies and procedures manuals.
- Ensures APP collaboration with physician requests, operating within state and federal standards.
- Takes a lead role in identifying, investigating, and resolving patient complaints.
- Evaluates and revises operating procedures to improve the efficacy of patient flow.
- Studies and makes recommendations for improving patient access to the practice and minimizing patient waiting times.
- Participates in management meetings and planning activities. Able to forecast resource requirements for implementation of practice goals and objectives.
- Prepares annual operating and capital budgets with assistance from Supervisors/Leads for areas of responsibility that reflect the on-going operational requirements of the Practice and new goals and objectives as directed by the COO.
- Prepares monthly analysis of budget variance reports. Implements operational changes to maintain compliance with budget objectives.
- Understanding of multiple EMR systems including those used at Slocum and at affiliated hospitals.

- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to type and 10 key by touch
- Knowledge of common Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Outlook, and Word.

- Direct reports of all PAs, NPs, CSFAs, RNFAs.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, and change positions for patient care and surgical assistance.
- Be able to work on a computer and keyboard for up to four hours a day.
- Able to walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Able to reach with hands and arms. Fine motor control as needed for surgery and medical office procedures
- Ability to hear and understand in person and over the phone.
- Able to speak and provide information in person and over the phone.
- Must be able to travel locally between hospital and surgery center locations.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
- PA-C or NP Certification
- Ability to obtain DEA licensure
- Current Oregon licensure
- Ability to be credentialed at hospitals, surgery centers, and with health plans
- Orthopedic experience is required
- At least 5 years of experience as a PA or NP working in orthopedic surgery
The Associate Director of Surgical Assistance plans, schedules, coordinates and supervises a team of PAs, NPs, RNFAs, and CSFAs and collaborates cross-functionally on operational needs, clinical practice, quality, performance, and financial outcomes of the APPs and Surgical Assistant teams.
