Middle School Math Teacher

Salary: $60,000 - $100,000 depending on qualifications and experience
Almaden Country Day School (ACDS) is seeking a middle school math teacher. Possible courses include 6th through 8th grade math, including Algebra, in an academically rigorous curriculum with small class sizes (typically 10-15 students). The math curriculum is both exploratory and problem-based. Students collaborate in teams and have opportunities to work on their own as well. This teaching methodology is consistent across the math department.
In addition to responsibilities teaching math, this teacher may also facilitate student meetings in conjunction with a student Advocacy program (similar to advisory at other schools) as well as possibly oversee a curriculum and assembly period (like a homeroom). Depending on the course load of the aforementioned classes, their teaching schedule may include teaching electives and other duties. Middle school teachers also help with organizing and chaperoning weeklong class trips once a year.
ACDS teachers are expected to differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of student needs and readiness levels. Keys to success at ACDS include an understanding and appreciation of children’s developmental stages, learning needs, and a deliberate focus on building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

Requirements/Responsibilities:

- Demonstrated success teaching middle school-aged children
- Familiarity with current middle school math curricula and commitment to making instruction active, engaging, varied and exciting for middle grades students
- Ability and willingness to design, develop, implement, and revise math curricula
- Familiarity with adolescent and developmental learning philosophy
- Knowledge of instructional strategies appropriate to the middle school learner
- Ability to design and implement differentiated instruction to meet individual student needs
- Understanding and compassion for students with specific learning challenges
- Evidence of professional development and commitment to personal and professional growth
- Commitment to a collaborative work style
- Passion for working with children and optimism, flexibility, and patience
- Technological competence and willingness to learn
- Willingness to carry out other duties and responsibilities beyond the classroom
- Teaching credential or equivalent degree
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of classroom experience as a lead teacher
- Experience with curriculum design
- Experience with leading advisory groups
- Google-certified educator
- Experience with other content areas and elective

Finalists may be asked to teach a demonstration lesson, to participate in a faculty-led interview, and to provide a writing sample. ACDS utilizes a variety of HR tools to assess candidates and select finalists for our job vacancies.

Overview of Almaden Country Day School:
Almaden Country Day School (ACDS) is an independent, Pre-K through 8th grade school located in the Almaden Valley of San Jose. The school's mission is to "discover the gifts in every child." ACDS promotes the belief that children learn best when instruction is age-appropriate, highly individualized, and joyful.
We serve approximately 400 students, with an average of 20 students per class. Our students graduate prepared for a rigorous high school experience. It is not unusual for half of the students in an ACDS graduating class to be accepted into high schools with academic distinction or honors placement. Approximately 20 percent of the student body receives tuition assistance.
ACDS strives to develop well-rounded children, with all students taking drama, world languages, physical education, performing and fine arts, and in the middle school, more than 40 choices for elective classes. The school’s signature enrichment programs, hands-on science featuring an outdoor classroom, a robust integrated technology program, and a strong drama program all contribute to the emphasis on whole-child instruction at ACDS.
Our parents are very committed to the school and follow the progress of their children carefully. Teachers are held to high expectations for meeting the needs of our children and families. We seek teaching candidates who are well versed in developmental pedagogy and differentiated teaching methods, and who are committed to providing individualized attention to our students and parents. A collaborative work style and a receptive attitude toward cooperative efforts are required in our small school. All positions involve additional required duties, such as playground and lunch supervision, chaperoning field trips, and more. Administrators are occasionally called to serve as temporary substitute teachers.
