The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking Motorized Vehicle Operators (MVO) III and IV to join our team These positions are housed in the Operations Section of the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB), which provides recycling, composting and cleanliness services for Arlington County. Employees will be required to operate various types of equipment and vehicles to include but not limited to the following:

  • Tractor-trailer in a landfill environment (MVO IV only);
  • Rubber tire loader in the Earth Products Recycling Yard;
  • Knuckle-boom truck for collection of brush material;
  • Hook lift roll off truck;
  • Street sweeping and vacuum leaf collection vehicles;
  • Small to medium sized dump trucks for delivering mulch;
  • Rear-loading refuse collection trucks for litter and other programs supported by the Solid Waste Bureau;
  • Stationary heavy equipment such as tub grinder, rock crusher, dirt shaker, or a trommel screen; and
  • Pick-up trucks towing a 6–12 foot trailer.

Specific duties include:

  • Preparing and maintaining County-owned or leased equipment, including maintaining equipment cleanliness, performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs on equipment;
  • Utilizing a computer and/or tablet to enter data to document daily work completed, pre-and post-trip inspections, and other relevant information;
  • Reading and following a map and using GPS to perform daily functions;
  • Assisting with leaf collection program, snow removal operations, special event services, and collection of trash and recyclables; andProviding information to residents regarding services provided such as brush collection or mulch deliveries, and interacting with other staff from various departments..


The ideal candidates will have experience in local government operations, especially within areas of recycling, composting, trash collection and cleanliness services. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess strong critical thinking and interpersonal skills for effective problem-solving and communicating with customers and team members.


Minimum Requirements:

Motorized Vehicle Operator III:

  • Two years of experience operating heavy automotive or related equipment such as dump trucks, street sweepers, knuckle boom truck and/or roll-off truck; and
  • Must possess a Class B or A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Motorized Vehicle Operator IV:

  • Considerable experience operating heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles of significant magnitude and complexity;
  • Must possess a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License;
  • Alternatively, applicant may possess a combination of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's license and a Class "A" CDL Learner's permit at time of interview but must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date.

Desirable : Preference may be given to candidates with more than two years' experience operating vehicles of significant magnitude and complexity, plus experience in one or more of the following:

  • Operating refuse collection equipment and dump trucks, street sweepers, knuckle boom trucks and/or roll-off trucks;
  • Towing a 6-12 foot trailer with a pick-up truck;
  • Using a tablet to input programmatic data for work purposes;
  • Performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs on automotive equipment; and/or
  • Possession of valid CDL Hazmat and/or Tanker endorsements

Special Requirements:

For both positions (MVO III, and MVO IV):

  • Applicant must possess a class "B" (or "A") Commercial Driver's License at time of application. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of their official driving record.
  • Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record, passing of the DOT physical and pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
  • Once hired, the employee will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment as required by federal, state, and local standards and regulations.A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, reference check, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Working Conditions :

  • The employee performs activities inside and outside.
  • The employee is subject to cold (below 32 degrees) for periods of more than one hour and/or temperatures above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions such as snow, rain, hail, wind and humidity.
  • The employee is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.The employee is subject to one more of the following conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids.


Physical Requirements :

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Additional Information:

Salary Range Information: The salary range listed at the top of this posting encompasses entry of MVO III level through maximum of MVO IV level. Qualified candidates will be placed based on experience and licensure requirements.

Motorized Vehicle Operator III: $52,062.40 - $79,497.60
Motorized Vehicle Operator IV: $57,033.60 - $87,068.80

Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employees must be available for call-back and/or to respond to emergency debris calls and other emergency situations. Employees will be required to work overtime as needed and may also be required to work some holidays and weekends.

NOTE: Arlington County provides a comprehensive leaf collection program to the residents including trash and/or recycling services for special events that will require overtime and weekend work. Employees within the Solid Waste Bureau are considered “essential staff'” during snow operations, emergency debris removal, or other County emergencies which may require overtime, weekend work, and/or working holidays or during times when other staff are not required to work.
