Introduction GRADE 18 LOCATION OF POSITION MDH, Laboratory Services, Baltimore, MD Main Purpose of Job This position will act as a scientist in the Division of Molecular Biology, Molecular Epidemiology- ARLN program. This position performs Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and other specialized molecular biology based test procedures on select bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory for detection of infectious disease agents and anti-microbial resistance (AMR). These duties will be performed as part of the Laboratories Administration quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable/infectious diseases in conjunction with federal, state, and local public health testing programs/ initiatives. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The desired candidate should possess the following:
  • Experience testing clinical specimens and knowledge of clinical laboratory guidelines (such as CAP, CLIA, CMS, ISO 15189)
  • Experience in real time PCR (qPCR) and other molecular platforms for infectious diseases in a BSL-2 laboratory
