The Lead Mechanical Engineer supports a variety of mission-critical programs with specific focus on opto-mechanical packaging design and analysis and associated new technology development, sustaining engineering and manufacturing production. Responsible for the design, layout, testing and evaluation of Laser range finder and target designator systems. Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval. Analyzes mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints. Investigates solutions to product or process problems. Consolidates results of mechanical design elements for assigned projects. Conducts investigations involving the origination or modification of material, component or process specifications or requirements. Performs product development activities including drawing creation and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.

Essential Functions:
  • Possess a working understanding of opto-mechanical packaging design, material/process selection for electronic hardware integration and environmental climatic test techniques specifically for Laser systems is highly desirable.
  • Executes verification testing as defined by the mechanical specification and test plan.
  • Conduct design analysis and testing, both structural and thermal, to prove design will meet customer requirements.
  • Generate and/or process engineering change orders (ECN’s) as required.
  • Work directly with mechanical designers on CAD models and part documentation.
  • Develop, review, and approve engineering documentation, including product specifications, drawings, assembly procedures, and test plans. Perform, guide, or review various types of advanced engineering analyses to characterize and validate proposed designs.
  • Support the assembly, integration and test of the product or prototype hardware.
  • Provide technical leadership and design oversight in support of existing product lines and new development efforts by interacting cross-functionally with various engineering disciplines, operations, supply chain, program management, customer representatives and vendors.
  • Interface with mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process engineers and operations personnel to streamline, problem solve and continuously improve product designs.
  • Interaction with manufacturing to ensure successful prototype design hand-off and production transition including support of test plans, fixture designs and work instructions.
  • Proposal support, basis of estimate creation and report/track task status in control account manager (CAM) role using earned value methods as needed.
  • Communicates within and outside of the organization which include customers or vendors. Works to influence others to accept individual or team’s views or practices and changes to concepts, practices, and approaches. Communicates with leadership regarding matters of importance to the functional or business area. May conduct briefings with leaders.
  • Work consists of making significant improvements of processes, systems, solutions, or products to enhance performance of job area. May develop new concepts or standards. Opportunities for problem solving and innovation are undefined, where information is difficult to obtain. Conducts extensive investigation to understand root cause of problems. Problems span a wide range of difficult and unique issues across the function and/or business area.
  • Implements strategic goals established by leadership. Establishes operational plans for job area with short-term impact on results (e.g., less than 1 year). Provides input into new products, processes, standards, and/or operational plans that will have measurable impact on the achievement of overall function or business results.
  • Must be a self-starter, versatile and adept at functioning in either lead or support role in small groups working on fast-paced projects encompassing initial conceptual product design all the way through transition to manufacturing production build. This may include detail design, light assembly, test verification, build support, thorough results documentation, and task completion on schedule & within budget.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Job Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Opto-Mechanical Engineering and minimum 9 years prior related experience, or Graduate Degree with a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

  • United States Citizenship required with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
  • 8+ years’ experience in design, development of electro-optical components and systems utilizing computer design tools (SolidWorks).
  • 6+ years’ experience with concentration in EO, opto-mechanical and/or laser focus in the defense industry.
  • 4+ years’ experience with opto-mechanical and electronic packaging design for Laser range finder and target designator systems.
  • 6+ years’ experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for design is required (SolidWorks or ANSYS).
  • 6+ years’ experience with GD&T and drawing standards. Mastery of ASME Y14.5 drawing standards, fundamental GD&T and dimensional stack-up tolerances, basic machine shop metal working capabilities, common finishes & fabrication methods.
  • Possess and maintain a valid US Passport.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
