Senior NSD Counselor

The Senior Counselor position is responsible for assisting and supporting youth while contributing insightful, practical, and meaningful information to the treatment planning process. In this role, the Senior Counselor will also function as a teaching assistant, providing educational support to help youth in re-entering the classroom, preparing for their GED, high school diploma, or fulfilling basic educational needs. This includes working closely with teachers to support individualized learning plans and offering one-on-one or group assistance to ensure the academic success of youth during their time in Non-Secure Detention.
Job Responsibilities
Serve as role model/lead counselor by orienting and training new staff; ensuring on call and incident reporting documentation are completed.
Account for welfare and well-being of youth always. Model appropriate behavior standards for youths. Must maintain visual sight of youth in program.
Help the teacher prepare classroom for class (clean desks, handout pencils, folders, needed materials, etc.)
Set up necessary material for classes, interactive/hands-on activities as directed by the teacher.
Review material taught in class with individual students with learning challenges.
Work with individual students or smaller groups of students for remedial teaching and/or reinforcing the learning process as directed by the teacher.
Make sure the classroom is safe and tidy before class starts and help tidy up room at day’s end.
In the absence of the teacher, carry out sub plans or act as lead role in the classroom in the absence of the teacher during break time, etc.
Assist the teach with other various tasks such as making copies, grading assignments, cleaning out folders of discharged students, setting up new folders for new students, informing teacher of student issues and concerns, supporting teacher as needed.
Assists with leading group sessions for youth. Lead group sessions as directed.
Under direction of a supervision of leadership, is responsible for implementing the shift work plan by assigning shift work and monitoring attendance/coordinating coverage as needed.
Counsel youth on individual and group basis to assist with adjustment/transition to program. Ensure youth follow and participate in program schedules. Communicating any concerns with youth are brought to the attention of program leadership.
Assist with daily meal preparation.
Assist with security and safety of youth and facility.
Job Requirements
Minimum High School/GED required, associate’s degree in related field preferred.
Minimum 1 – 3 years of experience working with at risk youth in detention/residential facility required.
TCI, First Aid/CPR certifications required.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule with variable hours including day, evening, weekend, holiday and subject to call hours.
Valid Driver’s License, with acceptable driving history to the Agency Travel is required. Ability to coordinate and plan travel for visits and appointments in efficient manner.
Ability to work with an economically and culturally diverse population.
Skills: Verbal and written communication skills.
