Purpose/Role Summary - The Prosthetic Technician is responsible for the construction, fit, maintenance, and repair of prosthetic devices and for maintaining a working prosthetic laboratory in a clean, safe, functional condition at all times.


Essential Job Functions

  • Read work orders to determine product specifications or materials requirements.
  • Read prescriptions and manufacturer specifications to determine the type of product or device to be fabricated and the materials and tools that will be required.
  • Construct and rectify cast impressions of patient torsos and limbs to create prosthetic devices.
  • Drill and tap holes for fasteners. Weld, fasten, or rivet parts securely to form prosthetic devices.
  • Create prosthetic devices, using thermoplastic and thermosetting materials, metal alloys, leather.
  • Bend, form, and shape materials to conform to contours of patient models and components.
  • Repair, modify, and/or maintain prosthetic limbs according to safety and functional specifications.
  • Cover or pad metal or plastic structures or devices, using rubber, leather, felt, plastic, fiberglass, etc.
  • Inspect and test prosthetic devices for alignment, movement, and biomechanical stability.
  • Transfer alignment of prosthetic devices using measuring tools and alignment fixtures.
  • Lay out and mark dimensions of parts, using templates and precision measuring instruments.
  • Draw guidelines or markings on materials or workpieces using patterns or other references.
  • Operate cutting, grinding, and polishing equipment.
  • Trim, polish, and finish materials, workpieces, or finished products for safe application to patients.
  • Mix pigments to match patients' preferred coloring and apply to lamination of prosthetic devices.
  • Manage ingredients and processes to create high quality, aesthetic, strong and specific finishes.
  • Apply protective and/or decorative finishes to workpieces or products.
  • Service and repair machinery, tools and equipment used in the fabrication of prosthetics.
  • Coordinate laboratory workflow and scheduling with clinical staff and ancillary staff members.
  • Create appropriate documentation to communicate and support the technical fabrication plan.
  • Bench align, test, and evaluate prostheses in lab, and adjust for proper fit, function, and comfort.
  • Select appropriate materials and components to be used, based on device design. Maintain awareness and education for new materials, components, and techniques.
  • Design prosthetic devices based on physicians' prescriptions and prosthetic clinician's examination and measurement of patients. Communicate effectively with clinical and administrative staff to provide technical and fabrication support of the treatment plan.
  • Create and modify plaster, foam or digital casts of areas that will be fitted with prostheses, for use in the device construction process. Prepare and rectify patient residual limb models to fabricate static test prostheses, dynamic test prostheses, and definitive prosthetic devices.
  • Confer with clinical staff to devise specifications and fabrication requirements for prosthetic devices.
  • Construct and fabricate prosthetic devices and effectively work with others in constructing them to the highest aesthetic, quality, and safety standards.
  • Maintain professional credentialing and licensure where applicable (ABC, BOC-P, State).
  • Repair, rebuild, and modify prosthetic devices. Analyze needs for repairs, rebuilding, modifying, or replacing prosthetic devices.
  • Demonstrate, educate, and explain prosthetic devices to clinical staff.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations; compliance with Medicare and other governmental regulations; compliance with First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, CPR, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
  • Act with integrity in all ways, remaining honest, transparent, and respectful in all relationships and perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 1-2 years clinical experience in prosthetics.
  • 1-2 years of technical experience.
  • Awareness and experience with safely using and servicing hand tools and power tools.
  • Prefer prosthetic technical experience.
  • Prefer formal training at O&P technical school.
  • Prefer ABC Registered Technician credential.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education Requirements High School diploma or equivalent. Formal training at an O&P technical program, and/or certification as an ABC Registered Technician is preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Martin Bionics Clinical Care facility(ies) which are Prosthetic Centers with administration, laboratory, and patient care functions being conducted simultaneously within the environment.
  • Must demonstrate the physical ability to safely move and carry up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Must coordinate and apply safe methods for heavier loads with appropriate tools and personnel.
  • Must perform physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping.

Work Environment

  • Location - Oklahoma City, OK (Corporate Offices).
  • Hours - Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm or equivalent schedule at supervisor's discretion.
  • Physical Environment - Indoors, climate-controlled prosthetic laboratory. Use of chemicals and plaster in a clean, ventilated environment. Rarely will noise levels exceed 80db.
  • Physical Requirements - Prolonged standing. Occasional lifting, moving, or transporting packages or containers in excess of 25 lbs.
