Job Summary: 

As a Systems Engineer within the Environmental Sensing group at OKSI, you will play a crucial role in developing laser-based optical systems for a range of applications. This could include but not limited to the following:
•    Isotope and trace gas sensors for NASA (e.g., water analysis on the Moon)
•    Isotope and trace gas sensors for laboratory or field analysis (e.g., CO2, CH4)
•    Diagnostic tunable laser absorption spectroscopy sensors for ground test facilities (e.g., temperature measurements in high-speed flows)

Job Duties:

You will work as a part of a team of scientists and engineers to develop and utilize optical sensors. The work done by the team includes
•    Design and assembly of systems: mechanical parts, optics, and electronics
•    Development of algorithms and data processing routines
•    Testing of components, breadboards, prototypes, and products in a laboratory setting, analyzing results, and determining next steps
•    Operating systems in “field campaigns” and delivering data products to customers
•    Determining new directions for expanding the technology and writing proposals.

Required Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a relevant technical field
•    Experience in developing, testing, and utilizing system hardware
•    Experience running experiments, collecting data, and summarizing results
•    Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate technical concepts through written documents, presentations, and face-to-face interactions
•    Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment
•    Authorized to work in the United States and successful background screening.

Desired Skills:

It is not required for the candidate to possess all the following skills, and it is understood that some of these skills will be further developed while at OKSI.
•    Mechanical design with CAD proficiency (e.g., SolidWorks)
•    Hands-on laser optics: breadboarding and aligning optical assemblies
•    Spectroscopy: analyzing data to identify and quantify species
•    Programming (e.g., C, C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and/or Python)
•    Electronics: circuit wiring, troubleshooting, component selection, circuit design
•    Optical design (e.g. Zemax).

Work location and hours: The position requires working full-time, on-site at our facility in Torrance, CA. The workload will vary depending on progress and task requirements.
