Lead Grower

ABOUT US:

Dan & Jerry’s Greenhouses is a family owned, wholesale producer of annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables since the 70’s. We partner with our retailers to support their garden centers throughout the Midwest, Northeast, and South Central U.S. We currently operate in five states and are the 12th largest greenhouse grower in the U.S.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The function of the Lead Grower is to participate in the growing of heathy plants, under the supervision of the Head Grower, to prepare for sale to our customers. This position will manage a section of plants and be responsible for providing direction to Growers and for the health of the plants in that section.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (comprehensive, but not limited to):

Plant Production:

• Lead the growing team to produce plants that meet the specifications of our customers.
• Assess watering needs, hand water and adjust irrigation systems accordingly to maintain plant health.

Growing:

• Manage the environment: climate, maintenance, safety-of the greenhouse.
• Follow directions from Head Grower on crop treatment.
• Provide strategies for crop locations and fertilizer and pesticide applications.
• Test and track water and soil samples.
• Provide strong communication to the Growers, Head Grower, and Production Supervisor.
• Be proactive, prompt, and diligent in all crop activities.
• Pesticide Applicator license required.

Supervisory:

• Provide work directions to growers on proper watering schedules.
• Supervise, train, and provide direction to other Growers.
• Provide input to Head Grower on performance issues and employee evaluations.

Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• 10+ years of successful Grower experience.
• 5 + years demonstrated experience as a leader amongst a growing team.
• Environmental control experience: Priva, Argus, Qcom, etc.
• 5+ years experience with injector, fertigation, chemigation
• Proficient in WPS and safety
• Applicator’s license required.
• Spanish speaking a plus

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Preferred: Selected college/vocational courses in horticulture/greenhouse Management

• Demonstrates a strong work ethic, flexible with work hours, and willing to be available when necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to perform occasional to continuous repetitive motion while walking, standing, sitting, distinguishing colors, lifting, and carrying objects up to 50 pounds. Will need to apply pesticides in Hazmat Personal Protective Equipment in temperatures that can exceed 110 degrees.
