Controls Technician - Machine - Tooling

The Equipment Maintenance Technician – Mechanical and Electrical plays a critical role in supporting the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment at customer sites. This position serves as the on-site customer interface, ensuring smooth equipment maintenance, production support, and operational efficiency. The technician applies advanced knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, PLCs, and electronic controls to identify and resolve equipment malfunctions effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble and disassemble tooling and production equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, fault detection, and electrical inspection and testing.
  • Operate equipment safely, adhering to OSHA and company safety protocols.
  • Use precision tools and instruments to locate and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Support PLC programming, troubleshooting, and network interface adjustments.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical/electronic principles, local and national electrical codes, and material properties to maintain and repair machinery.
  • Repair and adjust mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic equipment, including numerical controls and HMI systems.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation to diagnose and solve equipment issues.
  • Assemble components with accuracy, ensuring they meet specifications using hand tools and power tools.
  • Install and maintain communication cables, power distribution wiring, and related infrastructure.
  • Conduct plant-wide electrical maintenance and operational adjustments as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with PPE usage and promote safe work practices.
  • Provide technical assistance, including interpreting drawings and recommending solutions for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients while ensuring contractual obligations are met.
  • Participate in customer project meetings and assist in developing site logistics plans.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Trade school, apprenticeship, or associate’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with PLCs, HMI systems, and process controls.
  • 3+ years of experience with automated systems, including strong knowledge of controls software.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Ability to obtain or hold a Secret security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions.
  • Skilled in reading and understanding blueprints, schematics, and GD&T standards.
  • Hands-on experience with hand tools, power tools, and operating small machinery like drill presses, lathes, and grinders.
  • Expertise in using electrical meters for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear reporting and effective teamwork.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS software for maintenance tracking and documentation.
