SUMMARY:
The Senior Tool & Mold Maker works from blueprints and sketches to create or modify prototypes, tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and molds. Builds and repairs custom machine shop tools using machining equipment and measuring instruments. Operates lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines to produce tools. Independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Design templates and jigs to be used as work aids for convenient fabrication of products and parts.
- Use sketches, blueprints, specification, and models to plan and fabricate or modify prototypes, tools, molds/dies, jigs, and fixtures.
- Create custom tools using lathes, grinders, mills.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances required to set up the machines to produce custom tools.
- Inspect, set up, and test machinery and equipment such as drill press, lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, and other machines.
- Complete first run / First Article, mid-run point, and final inspections on jobs to ensure products / molds meet specifications and quality standards.
- Monitor tools, molds, and dies to assure their continued performance during production.
- Verify dimension of finished parts to ensure they conform to specifications using dial indicator, gauge blocks, calipers, and micrometers.
- Interface effectively in a positive manner with external and internal customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's Degree or its equivalent preferred. Completion of apprenticeship or trade school certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years’ related experience as a Tool & Mold/Die Maker.
- Must be proficient with Computer Aid Drafting (CAD) / Computer Aid Machining CAM). MasterCAM software experience preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of stamping presses, press controls, dies and tooling, feeders, straighteners, and other equipment.
- Must have strong math skills.
- In-depth knowledge of machine tools and their uses.
- Ability to visualize and compute shapes and tolerances.
- Extensive experience using hand power tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
- Ability to use hot runner and valve gate systems a plus.
- Ability to prioritize.
- Works well either independently or as part of a team.
- Follow all safety policies & procedures; including, but not limited to wearing all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Basic Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) skills.
