Senior Interior Designer
BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.
Position SummaryBB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Senior Interior Designer to join our team to assist with fulfilling the design and construction requirements of the FBI Architectural Engineering Services Unit (AESU) at the FBI North Campus at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Services include assisting the AESU’s staff in meeting the increasing requirements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Finance and Facilities Division, through providing preliminary planning, feasibility studies, functional studies, conceptual designs, development of design intent documents, and development and technical review of construction documents for renovation and construction projects. Construction estimating and review, project facilitation and inspection services during construction of projects may also be necessary.
Job Duties & Responsibilities- Perform as a consultant in the establishment of space and furniture design standards and criteria for construction projects; assist in the development of the Bureau’s Program of Requirements (POR)
- Provide on-site field survey measurements and verification including documentation of space, equipment, workflow, required adjacencies, communication and organizational requirements; provide recommendations based on observations
- Prepare space and stacking plans to accommodate functionality, mission and adjacency requirements
- Prepare blocking plans, schematic and conceptual designs, and design intent drawings in AutoCAD; ensure drawings comply with the Bureau’s POR, Campus Design Guides and Construction Standards
- Perform design reviews and submit technical comments in required format
- Ensure that drawings and specifications which are submitted to the FBI for review comply with Bureau requirements
- Manage design of projects throughout the project, from programming to post-occupancy; includes building and maintaining relationships with end users, local team, subject matter experts, program managers, service providers, etc.
- Assist with the development of furniture selection, layout, and procurement planning
- Review furniture proposals, documents, drawings, and specifications for accuracy and ability to meet Bureau requirements; provide comments and/or recommendations as necessary
- Participate in punch list walk-throughs of newly constructed/renovated space to ensure the space is ready to accept furniture delivery and installation
- Perform inspection of furniture to ensure all damage/defective or missing pieces are identified and develop punch list for repair/replacement of defective items
- Provide support in development of workspace standards, including designing spaces that will positively affect the health, morale, and productivity of building occupants
- Coordinate with AESU peer colleagues, FBI Project Managers, customers and other Bureau personnel/contractors, and other project team members on projects as necessary
- Provide other similar or related services not of a decision-making nature
- Provide miscellaneous services which require proficiency in the use of Microsoft’s Word, Excel, Power Point, Project software tools and AutoCAD
- Assist in the development of reports, studies and presentations
- Exhibit professionalism, good customer service and communication skills and serve as a cooperative team player
- Multitask and assume multiple projects or assignments simultaneously
- Collaborate and assist in resolving critical and possibly controversial issues with a multidiscipline team of architects, engineers and federal agency clients
- Exhibit resiliency if shifting priorities require reprioritization of workload
- Understand and implement standards as outlined in the POR, Campus Design Guides and Construction Standards; suggest edits or updates to these documents, as applicable
- U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a minimum, unescorted access to FBI facilities is required; Secret security clearance in JPAS at time of award is required; ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance in support of the FBI is required
- Knowledge
- Current knowledge of and relevant experience in workspace design, especially as it relates to the health and welfare of building occupants
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Software: Proficiency in the most current version of AutoCAD and MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required
- Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines autonomously
- Experience: 10 years’ experience as an Interior Designer in commercial/government office building design and construction is required; 20 years or more is preferable
- Education: A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Interior Design, is required
- Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
- Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms
- Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
