Direct Support Professional

Direct Support Professional Job Responsibilities:
Provides direct care to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Performs personal care tasks, including assistance with basic personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, and ambulation, medical monitoring, and health care related tasks.
Fosters positive relationships between caretakers and individuals served.
Ensures client safety and maintaining a safe environment.
Reminds and assists clients with self-administration of medications (with proper training).
Encourages self-help activities.
Reports changes in client’s condition or family situation to administrators and supervisors.
Document services provided.
Performs home management functions such as light housekeeping, laundry, bed making, and cleaning.
Plans meals, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving food/meals, feeding and clean-up.
Accompanies clients to scheduled appointments and transports clients or running errands for clients.
Assists with toileting, including bedpans, urinals, and commode chairs, as necessary.
Must be able to work all shifts.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
18 years of age or older
Valid driver’s license
Direct Support Professional Qualifications / Skills:
The client will exhibit practical knowledge of behavior management principles (TOVA), medication management, implementation of basic motor skills, training techniques, food handler's preparation, alternative communication systems and medical aspects of disabled populations.
Ability to work with clients with intellectual disabilities and enable clients to acquire, improve, and maintain maximum functional abilities.
Train and assist in settings which will allow peer interactions and an opportunity for community and social integration.
Ability to ensure the safety and welfare of clients by adhering to Medicaid, Office of Human Rights, the DBHDS, and OSHA regulations.
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
18 years of age or older
Valid driver’s license
Must submit to and pass a drug screening, a national and state background investigation, and a central registry check by the Department of Social Services.
