I. General Summary of Position
The Tool & Die Maker builds new tools and dies, primarily for internal use, and troubleshoots existing tools, dies, and equipment. This individual collaborates with the Tool Maintenance area and work closely with engineering and production staff. In this role you will transform raw materials into finished productions by reading drawings, sketches, and blueprints.

- Read blueprints, specifications, or technical drawings to setup, changeover, sharpen, or grind workpieces to specifications.
- Inspect, feel, and measure, workpieces to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet specifications.
- Verify tool and die alignment, and that clearances are set appropriately.
- Dress grinding wheels according to specifications.
- Life machined parts and position and secure parts on surface plate o worktable.
- Set up and operate grinding machines to grind metal workpieces such as dies, parts, and tools
- Monitor machine operations to determine whether adjustments are necessary; stop machines when problems occur.
- File or finish surfaces of workpieces using prescribed hand tools.
- Identify and suggest improvement to tools and dies to improve reliability and ease of maintenance.
- Read blueprints, specifications, or technical drawings to visualize product. In absence of technical drawings, use sketches, models, or descriptions.
- Determine process, equipment and machine tools required to manufacture and/or assemble product.
- Analyze parts and assemblies for manufacturability and consult engineering, as applicable, for design changes.
- Develop specifications and document built-on-the-fly tools and submit to engineering for formal documentation and tool number assignment.
- Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, EDMs, and grinders to produce product and verify conformance of parts to specifications.
- Prepare parts for heat treatment, select, and execute appropriate heat-treating process, and verify hardness or product post heat treat.
- Fit and assemble parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms.
- Troubleshoot problems with new or existing tools, dies, or equipment built in-house.
- Review exiting tools, dies, and equipment and discuss improvements with engineering.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by leadership.
I. Qualifications
- High School Degree or GED
- 2+ years’ experience in a machining/tool & die making role using CNC equipment; hands on experience using precision measuring tools, such as micrometers, indicators, gauges, calipers, etc.
- Must be able to interpret detailed drawings and their dimensional tolerancing
- Proven creative skills in design and the ability to improve existing designs
- Detail oriented with high level of accuracy with data and strong math skills
- Possess strong organizational and time management skills
- Highly effective communications skills with the ability to interact with team members across the organization
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
