Job DescriptionJob Description

The innovations chemist will perform organic synthesis to support Emery Oleochemicals’ existing and new businesses via bench-scale developmental products, production support, and product investigation/troubleshooting.
The individual will work well in a team environment, yet independent enough to self-direct some research efforts. The individual will be responsible for keeping good written records in laboratory notebooks, produce detailed reports, possess good oral and written communication skills, and work well with others in a fast-paced, multi-tasking team environment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Labwork
a.Candidate will conduct syntheses in the P&AD laboratory to provide support to existing and new businesses.
b.Candidate will be able to independently setup, execute and monitor bench-scale reactions using a variety of chemistries, but primarily focused around esters
c.Candidate will assist in troubleshooting process and product development issues, both for internal (production) and external customers.
2.Compliance
a.Candidate will continuously improve the capabilities and reputation of the research laboratory through development or acquisition of new technologies
b.Candidate will support generating new product data for safety/regulatory compliance
c.Candidate will maintain a research notebook in compliance with company policies
3.Reporting
a.Candidate will provide reports on experimental results and requisite data to support product development, manufacturing, tech transfer and registration
4.Teamwork
a.Candidate will perform all assigned tasks necessary for the maintenance and organization of the department.
b.Results-oriented person with attention to detail, a creative thinker, who is driven to deliver on-time across a range of project scopes

QUALIFICATIONS
•Background in organic chemistry, with a strong mechanistic understanding and experience with standard production processes/scale-up
•Minimum 2 years’ experience (for MS/BS) in research and/or industrial settings. PhD is a plus
•Ability to think creatively in finding solutions to novel chemistry challenges
•Experience with lubricants/greases, polyester polyols, fatty acids is a strong plus
•Demonstrated record of creative thinking, problem-solving, and development of new manufacturing processes
•Proficient in the use of analytical instrumentation to support reaction monitoring (titration, GC-MS, NMR)
•Excels in planning, execution, data presentation, writing technical reports and meeting deadlines.
•Strong communication skills, team player.
•Highly motivated to exceed expectations of colleagues and customers
•Deliver high quality results with integrity and reliability
