Design Engineer I
Summary
Reporting to the Director of Engineering and working with the engineering team, the Design Engineer I designs and documents company electrical mechanical products. Products must meet or exceed company production and quality standards and meet customer delivery requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
- Take design direction to design products, meeting engineering standards, applicable codes, customer specifications, and within cost constraints.
- Use GD&T for dimensional tolerancing.
- Understand the basics of the injection molding process and tools.
- Ensure conformance for quality and manufacturability through PPAP and Critical Dimensional Analysis.
- Use and maintain design layouts in a CAD system.
- Revise existing drawings and create drawings on PTC Creo CAD system.
- Develop BOM’s, technical drawings, diagrams and other design documentation.
- Redesign standard products, improving quality and productivity, while reducing costs.
- Evaluate and select components and parts for the products.
- Develop working relationships with manufacturing departments to address and resolve problems and to develop better cooperation for working together toward producing the highest quality products at the lowest possible cost.
- Participate on cross-functional teams to address and resolve manufacturing, design and quality problems, and ensure the continuous, on-going improvement of processes and methods.
- Suggest ideas for new products.
- Keep informed of new parts or methods to improve products or product designs.
- Complete special projects as assigned.
- Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documents, etc.
- Continue to stay current in CAD, other design tools and new developments in the industry.
- Follow all file management procedures.

Education and/or Experience
Requires a BS in related engineering and 0-5 years of related experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical specifications, professional journals, and blueprints. Ability to write reports and documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Qualifications
Requires the ability to operate a CAD system, including related hardware and software. Requires ability to 3D CAD layouts to generate product drawings. Prefer experience in PTC Creo.
Preferred experience designing electrical mechanical parts made from:
- Injection molding with inserts
- Cold heading
- Stamping
- Machining
Preferred experience working with:
- DFMEA
- Metrology
- Root cause analysis
- 6 Sigma
