Project Summary:
This position supports the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world’s largest biomedical library. NLM’s mission is to make biomedical information more accessible, enabling scientists, healthcare professionals, and the public to benefit from this knowledge. As part of this role, you will be developing web applications and services that contribute to the dissemination of critical health information and resources, driving innovation in the healthcare sector.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Estimate project timelines and scope based on initial requirements.
  • Define the technical requirements of web-based projects.
  • Architect and implement website and CMS projects using technologies such as Django.
  • Assist front-end developers with template integration and ensure smooth project handoffs.
  • Integrate content and services from third-party providers using APIs.
  • Collaborate with other developers and project leaders to ensure high-quality code and design fidelity.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong expertise in Python and Django.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, jQuery, and Backbone.js.
  • Experience with databases such as Oracle, MySQL, and SQLServer.
  • Keen attention to detail to ensure the design’s integrity throughout the development process.
  • Proficiency in version control systems (Git).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact with clients professionally and clearly.
  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with Ruby, Perl, and ColdFusion.
  • Experience with responsive design frameworks like Bootstrap or Foundation.
  • Experience with DjangoCMS or Ruby on Rails.
  • Knowledge of deployment frameworks.
  • Experience working with JavaScript frameworks (Grunt, Angular).

 

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience with a strong track record of building consumer-facing web applications or services.
  • Expertise in Python (specifically Django) and responsive front-end design.
  • Experience using version control systems (Git) and cloud-based services (AWS, Linode).
  • Self-motivated, accountable, and able to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
