Job Summary
As a Sheet Metal Mechanic, you will be responsible for executing and overseeing the sheet metal work for assigned projects, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards. You will work closely with the project superintendent, foreman, and other staff to coordinate efforts and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
Job Duties
General Responsibilities:
Safety: Maintain a strong commitment to safety in all work activities.
Coordination: Collaborate with the superintendent, foreman, and project team to align on daily tasks and expectations.
Housekeeping: Keep work areas clean and organized throughout the day.
Arrival on Project:
Introduction: Upon arrival, introduce yourself to the superintendent, foreman, and project staff.
Sign-In: Sign in at the designated meeting area to receive the day's work assignments.
Safety Orientation: Complete any required safety training or orientation for the project.
Project Familiarization: Acquaint yourself with the project layout, including dumpsters, traffic hazards, staging areas, roof access, building access, evacuation plans, and any general hazards.
Beginning of Workday:
Punctuality: Arrive on time or early to meet with the crew at the established meeting area.
Sign-In: Sign in at the designated meeting area to receive that day’s work assignments.
Tool Preparation: Quickly collect all consumables and necessary company tools for the day's work. Ensure company tools are signed out by the onsite superintendent; no tools should be taken without proper authorization.
Work Area Assignment: Report to your assigned work area and begin your tasks.
Throughout the Day:
Task Completion: Stay focused and complete your assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and professionally.
Helper Supervision: If assigned a helper, ensure they are on task and assist you as needed.
Consumables Management: Monitor the availability of consumables and have the helper refill them as necessary.
Continuous Housekeeping: Maintain cleanliness and organization in your work area throughout the day.
End of Day:
Cleanup: Begin cleaning your work areas 15 minutes before clock-out time.
Housekeeping Verification: Inspect your crew’s work area to ensure all housekeeping tasks are completed.
Trash Disposal: Dispose of all trash in the appropriate dumpsters at the end of each day.
Equipment Maintenance: Plug in electric equipment for charging and check/refill fuel levels for gas- or diesel-powered equipment.
Tool Return: Ensure all tools and equipment are returned and checked back in at the end of the day.
Sign-Out: Return to the assigned meeting area to sign out and debrief with the superintendent.
Safety Requirements:
PPE Compliance: Always wear the appropriate PPE for the task, including safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, pants, and a high-visibility shirt with at least 4" sleeves.
Tool and Equipment Training: Ensure you have proper training for the tools and equipment you are using.
Equipment Inspection: Verify that any rental equipment is functioning correctly. Report any issues to the foreman or superintendent.
Fall Protection: Ensure you are 100% tied off when working in a lift or near any leading edge with a height greater than 6 feet without a safety barrier.
Job Qualifications:
Previous experience as a Sheet Metal Mechanic or similar role.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures in construction environments.
Ability to read and interpret project plans and specifications.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
Physical ability to perform the tasks required, including lifting heavy materials and working at heights.
