Position Summary:

The PLC & Robotics Technician – Automotive is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and programming automated systems within an automotive manufacturing environment. This role focuses on optimizing the performance of robotic systems, PLCs, and associated equipment to support high-efficiency production lines, ensuring safety, reliability, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

System Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and repair issues in PLCs, robotic systems, and production equipment used in automotive manufacturing.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automation systems, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical, mechanical, and programming issues with robotic welders, conveyors, paint systems, and assembly line equipment.

Programming and Configuration

  • Program, modify, and optimize PLCs (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens) to meet production demands.
  • Develop and adjust robotic programs for automotive-specific applications, including welding, material handling, and assembly tasks.
  • Integrate and configure HMI systems for user-friendly operation and monitoring.

System Integration and Installation

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to implement new robotic cells, conveyors, and automated systems into existing production lines.
  • Commission and calibrate robotic systems to ensure accuracy and compliance with automotive quality standards.
  • Support installations and upgrades of automation systems, adhering to project timelines.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and implement enhancements to robotic and PLC systems to improve production efficiency and cycle times.
  • Evaluate and recommend automation solutions to support lean manufacturing and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to support continuous improvement projects.

Documentation and Training

  • Maintain detailed documentation of PLC and robotic programs, schematics, and maintenance logs.
  • Provide training to maintenance and production staff on the safe operation and basic troubleshooting of robotic systems.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, including OSHA and ISO 9001/TS 16949, for all automation systems.
  • Conduct safety inspections and implement risk mitigation measures for automated processes.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Technology, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in PLC programming, robotics, and automation in an automotive manufacturing environment.

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in PLC programming and troubleshooting (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens).
  • Proficiency with automotive robotics systems (e.g., FANUC, KUKA, Yaskawa, ABB).
  • Knowledge of robotic applications in welding, assembly, and material handling.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profibus, CAN bus).
  • Experience with HMI design and integration.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Work Environment:

  • Automotive manufacturing facility with exposure to robotic assembly lines, welding cells, and other automated systems.
  • May require shift work and occasional travel to support installations or off-site projects.
