Pool-School Nurse Substitute (RN)

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To be able to function in the absence of the school nurse assigned to the campus. Implement a comprehensive program of health services for the campus. Provide direct health services to students. Promote health education and preventive practice for students. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: * Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program * Valid Registered Nurse's License to practice professional nursing in Texas by the Texas Board of Nursing * Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision and hearing screening (or obtain in the first 3 months) * Certified by UTRGV Border Health to conduct Acanthosis Nigricans screening (or obtain in the first 3 months) * Current CPR/BLS Certification * Seizure First Aid/Stop the Bleed (or obtain in the first 3 months) Special Knowledge/Skills: * Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health problems * Understands their scope of practice * Knowledge of applicable laws, federal and state regulations, and local policies pertaining to school nursing practice * Make independent and timely nursing decisions and to triage Experience: Two years nursing experience, preferably in school/public health, nursing home, or hospital setting MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Program * Provide temporary, first aid, and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures and doctor's standing orders. * Serve as a health advocate for students. * Notify parents of accident or illness that occur during school and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached). * Coordinate a management system to administer medications to students at school. * Administer medications according to district policy and procedures and doctor's standing orders. Train and monitor authorized school employees to administer medications in your absence. * Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy. Make appropriate referrals and follow ups as necessary. * Vision * Hearing * Dental * Height/Weight * Acanthosis Nigricans * Scoliosis * Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation as per SHAC committee for program and implement changes based on the findings. * Provide/Reinforce diabetic training to UDCA * Making decisions relating to delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance * Records accurately services rendered and interpret and explain records, reports, health care plans, accommodations and medical interventions Instruction * Have reliable transportation available during the workday. * Participate in the implementation of the campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups. * Provide health counseling and instruction on an individual or group basis. * Provide instruction to required staff on epinephrine auto injectors including anaphylaxis, and AED annually. Provide instruction to required staff on stop the bleed and seizure first aid as indicated by law. Consultation * Serve as a health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community. * Perform assessment of student problems and make appropriate referrals * working with students, teachers, parents, and the medical and health care community as needed. * Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, child abuse situations, and school committees. * Make home visits concerning health problems as necessary with permission of the principal. * Communicate regularly with principal and head nurse regarding health services issues. * Recommendations in the planning and development of health accommodation plans for section 504 or special education students if consulted. * Serve as a consultant with other school professionals such as food service personnel, physical education teachers/coaches, special education, and counselors Administration * Review and monitor immunization records. * Enforce procedures to ensure proper administration, safety, and security of medications, first aid or health supplies, and campus health equipment. * Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students. * Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory. * Comply with policies established by state and federal law, Texas Department of State Health services rule, State Board of Education, Nursing Practice Act, Board Regulations, and board policy in the area of health services. * Coordinate and organize a district Health Fair/Event at least once a year. * Report potential health and safety hazards to principal. * Oversee infection control measures * Substitute school nurse will perform other health-related duties and function as assigned by the Head Nurse/Principal. Professional * Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. * Maintain certification in CPR/BLS, vision and hearing screening, Acanthosis * Nigricans screening, and as a health screener. * Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. * Perform any other duties as may be assigned. * Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others. EQUIPMENT USED: Thermometer, blood pressure cuff/machine, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, scoliometer, scale, stadiometer, stethoscope, pulse oximeter, computer, fax, copier, scanner, and printer. Automated External Defibrillator, bleeding control kit, and EpiPen. WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policies and procedures, maintain emotional control under stress.
