Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Manual Machinist to join our dynamic team at a large job shop located at the Old Naval Base in Charleston, SC. This role involves working on large driveshafts for aircraft carriers and large ships. The ideal candidate will have experience in a job shop environment, working with large equipment, and preferably, in-place machining experience.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate manually controlled machines for skilled precision and bench work in the fabrication, maintenance, repair, and alteration of machinery, machine parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Use precision tools, Manual & CNC machinery, and equipment such as lathes, milling machines, horizontal boring mills, vertical turning lathes, grinders, drill press, hydraulic press, band saw, and a variety of cutting tools and equipment.
  • Fabricate, machine, and shape parts such as tools and machine parts out of metal.
  • Properly and safely select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
Essential Skills
  • 3-5 years of manual machining experience.
  • 6-10 years of total job shop experience.
  • Experience with lathe, mill, and running and operating manual lathe, grinders, boring mills.
  • Ability to read drawings, understand fractions, ratios, and proportions.
  • Comfortable using machining tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Experience in large part machining, including ship propeller shafting and ship steering gear.
  • Ability to read blueprints and use measuring tools.
  • Micrometer and caliper experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Programming experience is a plus.
  • Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. when required.
