Transplant Financial Coordinator

Job SummaryThe Transplant Financial Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and managing patient-specific insurance and financial aspects of transplant care, with a high standard of accuracy and efficiency. Working closely with patients and their families from referral through post-transplantation, the role ensures financial continuity and addresses questions on insurance and other financial matters. The position involves close collaboration with the transplant team, administrative staff, billing, financial, and clinical personnel to ensure coverage and resolve any financial barriers to transplantation. Compliance with financial, privacy, and transplant regulations is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and clarify insurance and financial aspects of care, maintaining less than 5% inaccuracy.
- Assist patients with insurance inquiries, financial questions, and provide continuity of care from referral through post-transplant.
- Collaborate with transplant team members, administrative staff, and other personnel to secure financial coverage for transplant and living donor services.
- Document patient insurance benefit details and exclusions, assessing criteria for transplant program financial eligibility.
- Serve as a financial and insurance resource, providing educational materials and discussing financial benefits and pitfalls with patients and families.
- Obtain and verify payor authorizations and approvals for transplant services, including emergency clearances.
- Monitor insurance coverage throughout all transplant phases, maintaining relationships with insurance case managers and medical directors.
- Proactively address patient billing issues and serve as a liaison with billing offices for resolution.
- Maintain knowledge of UNOS and CMS regulations related to transplant finance, following institutional policies.
- Participate in transplant selection committee meetings, preparing financial reports and providing expertise.
- Interface with non-contracted health plans to secure necessary financial guarantees or Letters of Agreement (LOA).
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA standards, safeguarding patient information in all communications.
- Represent the transplant department professionally in interactions and appearance, fostering teamwork and collaboration.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; AA preferred, BA/BS preferred (two years of transplant financial experience may substitute for minimum education).
- Experience in the medical field with a focus on transplant finance preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and transplant processes.
- Ability to become proficient in EMR and other IT systems.
- Problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to provide effective resolutions.
- Bilingual strongly preferred; department translator certification preferred if bilingual.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual candidates strongly preferred for improved patient interaction.
- Familiarity with insurance processes related to transplant services, including patient education on financial benefits and options.
Certifications
- Fire and Safety Certification required within 30 days of hire.
