Job Description
The Phlebotomist aims to serve patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening standards. The Phlebotomist shall draw quality blood samples while creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.
Responsibilities- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, decontaminate, and update patient information.
- Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers courteously.
- Collect specimens according to established procedures, clearly explaining the process of venipuncture or other specimen collection as required.
- Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after the collection process.
- Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Venipuncture experience in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed (if applicable).
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a lab or hospital setting.
- Willingness to travel throughout assigned geography about 100% of the time.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Excellent patient interaction skills both in person and by phone.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
