Overview

The Captain will assist in providing direction of daily crew activities through integrated supervisory responsibilities including leadership,
evaluation, and discipline. S/he w ill assist their Battalion Chief supervisor in ensuring the shift's adherence to all policies and procedures
and decision relating to the overall safe operation of ambulance operations in accordance with Arizona state regulations and local medical direction.This position is responsible for operating hydraulic gurneys and pow er lifts, emergency and non-emergency ambulance driving, and the use of portable ambulance medical equipment.


Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Demonstrates ability to assist and deliver patient care utilizing a team approach.

* Demonstrates ability to critically assess a situation and call for additional resources as needed.

* Manages or assists in the assessment and treatment of simple and multi system trauma and medical emergencies.

* Demonstrates ability to administer CPR for extended periods of time.

* Demonstrates ability to identify and manage or assist partner with life threatening problems.

* Ability to obtain manual vital signs.

* Demonstrates ability to professionally interact with all levels of pre-hospital care providers from various agencies within response region.

* Interacts directly with patients, families, the general public, local community groups, law enforcement personnel, fire department personnel, physicians and nurses.

* Demonstrates ability to utilize good judgement and remain calm in high stress situations (safely work around violent and other high risk patient populations).

* Demonstrates ability to document patient care.

* Ability to work comfortably around loud noises and flashing lights.
Ambulance & Equipment Management
* Assists partner in ensuring that all stations and ambulance are stocked, cleaned and ready for daily use.

* Serves as an expert in the setup, use, and management of all ALS and BLS equipment.

* Maintains familiarity with the use/operation/ and troubleshooting of problems of all GMT equipment.

* Assists partner in applying splints, KED and Hair traction splint as needed.

* Assists in the rapid deployment of equipment as needed for patient care.


Communication
* Demonstrates the ability to interpret written, oral and diagnostic form instructions and relay critical information to partner or other clinicians.

* Demonstrates the ability to communicate via radio and cell phone.

* Demonstrates the ability to communicate providers patient care and continuing patient care needs to receiving clinician.

* Demonstrates the ability to communicate with all levels of pre-hospital care providers from various agencies within response region.

* Demonstrates the ability to communicate directly with patients, families, the general public, local community groups, law enforcement personnel, fire department personnel, physicians, and nurses.


Emergency & Fleet Vehicles
* Demonstrates ability to operate emergency vehicles during non emergent (no lights or sirens) and emergent (lights and sirens) situations.

* Operates GMT fleet vehicles.

* Assists with securing patients or other riders with seatbelts or other appropriate restraining devices.

* Assists with securing equipment inside the ambulance and specifically in the patient compartment.


Leadership
* Assists in the direction of quality improvement/ assurance program through program development, critiques, debriefings and audits.

* Attends leadership meetings.

* Acts as Battalion Chief as necessary.

* Participates and leads in integral projects to the improvement and maintenance of GMT operations.


Education
* Maintains knowledge of trends in pre-hospital and emergency medicine.

* Acts as a preceptor/ mentor for new hire EMT's, Paramedic students and new hire Paramedics.

* Oversees EMT partner during patient care situations.


Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.

* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Completes scheduled team approach training on equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting.


Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED- Required

Associates or Bachelors in related field- Preferred


Certification & Licensures
Arizona certification as a Certified Emergency Paramedic (EMCT-P)- Required

Current BLS, ALS & PALS (American Heart Association)- Required

Valid Arizona Driver's License with no moving violations within the prior 36 months- Required

Must provide a current official copy of driving record prior to employment and on an annual basis thirty (30) days prior to evaluation- Required

PHTLS or ITLS- Preferred

National Registry Paramedic- Preferred


Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.


Experience
Minimum 2 years experience with Guardian Medical Transport, must have a complete and thorough understanding of Guardian's policies and procedures- Required

Minimum 1 year experience as a paramedic with Guardian Medical Transport, must have a complete and thorough understanding of paramedic policies and procedures- Required

Prior experience providing patient care in a busy EMS system- Preferred

Prior experience working in patient care (hospital based)- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
