Phoenix, United States W3Global Inc. Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

As a senior estimator, your role involves a combination of technical knowledge, attention to detail, and strong communication skills to ensure that construction or manufacturing projects are completed within budget and on time. Your responsibilities can be broken down into several key stages:

1. Project Selection and Initial Evaluation:

Assess Project Scope: Understand the full scope of the project by reviewing all provided documentation, such as blueprints, specifications, and any other relevant project details.

Initial Feasibility: Assess the project for feasibility based on available resources and potential risks to ensure that an accurate estimate can be prepared.

2. Estimate Organization:

Break Down the Estimate: Organize the estimate by breaking it down into labor, materials, and time requirements for each stage of the project.

Collaboration with Other Teams: Work with project managers and engineers to get their input and ensure all aspects of the project are considered in the estimate.

3. Take-Offs:

Quantities and Measurements: Use the project plans to conduct accurate take-offs to determine the quantities of materials, labor, and other resources required.

Review Plans: Ensure that every detail in the plans is accounted for, including any special conditions or deviations that could impact the cost.

4. Pricing:

Cost Database Utilization: Use historical data, cost databases, or vendor quotes to establish pricing for labor, materials, and any additional services required.

Subcontractor Quotes: If applicable, obtain quotes from subcontractors for specialized work and ensure these quotes are incorporated into the overall estimate.

Risk Adjustments: Factor in any potential risks, such as price fluctuations or unforeseen delays, by applying contingency allowances or escalation factors.

5. Review and Adjustments:

Check for Accuracy: Ensure all estimates are accurate by cross-referencing quantities, unit prices, and labor hours.

Internal Review: Have the estimate reviewed by other estimators or senior management for additional oversight to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Refinement: Adjust the estimate based on feedback or new information obtained during the review process.

6. Client Communication:

Present the Estimate: Communicate the final estimate to the client in a clear, concise manner. Be ready to explain how the costs were calculated and any assumptions made during the estimation process.

Address Questions: Answer any questions or concerns the client may have and provide clarification when necessary.

Provide Updates: Regularly communicate project progress and status to the client and management, especially when there are changes in scope or unforeseen issues that might affect the project timeline or cost.

7. Closeout:

Final Documentation: Once the estimate is accepted, finalize all documentation, ensuring it is well-organized and easily accessible for future reference.

Monitor Progress: Stay involved during the construction or manufacturing phases to track the actual costs versus the estimates, providing updates to management if deviations occur.

Lessons Learned: After project completion, assess the accuracy of your estimate and learn from any discrepancies to improve future estimates.

Key Skills Required:

Attention to Detail: To ensure accurate calculations of materials, labor, and other costs.

Analytical Thinking: To identify potential risks and adjust estimates accordingly.

Strong Communication: For clear and effective communication with clients, management, and subcontractors.

Time Management: Efficiently managing multiple estimates and meeting deadlines.

Familiarity with Software: Using estimating software (Electrical Bid Manager & On-Screen Takeoff preferred) and spreadsheets to calculate, track, and adjust estimates as necessary.

By effectively managing these responsibilities, you ensure that projects are accurately priced and that the construction or manufacturing process runs smoothly, meeting client expectations while staying within budget and time constraints.
