Job Summary:
This position is responsible for supporting a variety of Metallurgical services including metallographic and physical testing, product / process control testing and development, failure analysis, and problem solving. The incumbent also provides leadership and support for assigned programs and projects to ensure compliance with customer specifications, internal engineering standards, and AS9100 quality system requirements in a custom precision manufacturing facility.
Responsibilities:
- Provide ongoing metallurgical analyses and physical test results for production process control, product quality assurance, and provides product and material analyses.
- Review drawings, compare internal and external specifications against manufacturing processes, identifies gaps, and provides timely information to address discrepancies.
- Provide technical support to the manufacturing floor, including visual aids, instructions, inspection forms, etc., to support Production and Quality objectives.
- Conduct periodic Quality reviews and internal audits (Flight Safety, AS9100, Gauge R&R, Capability studies, PFMEA, etc.).
- Perform routine and non-routine audits on laboratory procedures and analyses ensuring high levels of accuracy in both testing procedures and evaluations.
- Serve as the resident “Subject Matter Expert” for Heat Treating and Chemical Processing activities with an emphasis on Nadcap requirements.
- Perform various tests including surface temper etch, macro- and microhardness, physical, and mechanical property testing.
- Monitors Heat Treat equipment to ensure that the requirements of any/all applicable industry pyrometry standards are met.
- Develop and maintain work instructions, processing parameters and processing methods conforming to customer and/or industry standards.
- Prepare metallurgical specimens for analysis, makes accept/reject decisions, and reports the results as required.
- Oversee the training, training requirement, qualifications, and skill enhancement of Metallurgical Laboratory and Heat Treat Technicians.
- Establish and enforce safe laboratory practices.
- Provide leadership, support, and guidance to other departments as necessary.
- Interface with customers on areas of expertise and responsibilities as required.
- Develop competencies in areas of interest, such as Advanced Quality techniques, Continuous Improvement, Process Development, scrap reduction, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned, scheduled and/or required.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science or similar Engineering discipline, with one to three (1 to 3) years manufacturing experience.
- Background in metal removal, alloy steel thermal processing (thru-hardening, carburizing, temper, etc.), chemical processing, AMS2750, and Nadcap requirements preferred.
- Physically mobile and able to safely perform routine tasks (standing, sitting, bending, lifting up to 40 lbs).
- Must have a solid understanding of business, cost elements, and manufacturing processes.
- An advanced level of mechanical comprehension.
- Solid analytical problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to effectively interact with all levels of the organization both orally and written.
- Desire to develop competencies in areas of interest, such as Advanced Quality techniques, Continuous Improvement, Process Development, scrap reduction, etc.
